I've been searching the web and can't figure this out. I assume that it's not covalent binding. Is it ionic?

From the dense wikipedia page on "hemoglobin":A sixth position can reversibly bind oxygen by a coordinate covalent bond

the binding of oxygen to the hemo group isn't that super simple. its apparently a covalent bond between many different atoms. i wouldn't worry about it too much, just know that its reversible binding. binding in terms of proteins and enzymes isn't always as simple as covalent, ionic (electrostatic), or noncovalent. sometimes you can have binding due to hydrophobic interactions.
