Kinda obvious question but I want to know how different the procedure for finding ermployment as a dentist fresh out of school is vs fresh out of dental school? What are the resources that are available at the dental schools in general?

So what school is the dentist fresh out of in the first question...elementary? I'm just being a wise ass b/c your question is poorly worded and should be how do you find a job?

The best place to find a job is though people you know. But remember you are not looking for a job, you are looking for a practice. Your school will help you somewhat, but I recommend talking and meeting dentists in the area you want to practice before you go to dental school, so when you escape you have someone to turn to for practices to buy. Dentistry isn't a "job" its a career.

Try the newspaper want-ads or your local temp agency. Seems to me if you are able graduate from dental school you must have enough resources to be able to answer this question yourself.

But in case you don't, seriously speaking --- all you have to do is look in the back of a current JADA. They list associateships and practices for sale under each state.

What I meant to ask is what type of support services are there when it comes to finding a job for a dental school graduate? How does it differ from say somebody who is looking for a job fresh out of college(aside from the obvious it's for dental jobs)?

Man, you just don't get it. What is different from a college grad? How about the fact that you have doctorate and can pretty much pick and choose where you want to go. You actually have legitimate skill and knowledge to practice without any additional training. You don't really have to look, you get asked to come work here or there, or you can even start your practice from scratch.

I think this guy might be in junior high or something. We're just giving you a hard time because it is plainly obvious you don't have any life experience or even a superficial knowledge of dentistry as it is practiced. Let me just say that if you complete dental school, the opportunity to "find work" will have it's a$$ crack pinched on your nose, so you don't have to look very far.

omsres, you'll have an ass crack pinched on your nose as soon as you're out practicing, lose your malpractice case and go to a "federal pound me in the ass prison". Not to mention where the tea bag will be.

Why are people jumping all over me for this question? Is it an obviously dumb question??? 😕 Isn't there a difference in how people find employment for somebody with very specialized skills (i.e. dentistry) over a generalist( a lot of people with Bachelor's degree)??

omsres,
I hope you are not like this in real life because you will find that you will have very few patients to treat. I know because as a patient I would never entrust somebody with such an attitude to treat me.

i don't see anything wrong with younger people posting on this board to gather information about future careers and whatnot. message boards can be a resource just as much as going to the career center at school or whatever.

as a senior in college, you network as much as you can by going to career fairs, trying to get research and internships with companies you are interested in jobs with, and fill out applications and do interviews with different organizations until you get hired somewhere. usually colleges are very helpful in organizing career gatherings and notifying you of internship and research availabilities (at least my university was). a small (very small) percentage of college graduates may attempt to open their own business and a few are even successful in that.

as a senior or resident in dental school, you can choose to either open your own practice, buy an already established practice, or be hired by an older doctor after graduation. opening one's own dental practice has a very high success rate given that you choose a good location and, well, that you are a good dentist and interact well with patients. getting a practice loan is very easy for new doctors (according to older doctors and admissions people i have talked to.) if you would rather buy a practice or associate (work as an employee of the senior doctor) for a while after graduation, you can check newspaper ads, ads in dental journals, things like that for practices that are for sale or want new associates. you could also advertise yourself and see if any doctors contact you with an interest in hiring a new associate. once you find these practices, you would go to the practice and observe/interview with the other doctor and hopefully find a practice that you will fit in with.

in my opinion, once you have a doctorate or graduate degree of any type it is generally much, much easier to find a well paid and satisfying job in your field of interest.

Hope this helps.

blankguy, sorry for my son's behaviour. His mother and I have be trying to ease him into public, but clearly he is not ready. I assure you he will be grounded starting right now and I'm taking away all his "hotmale" and "stud" magazines.
