The thyroid takes up the iodine and the iodine ablates the gland. I don't know that there is too much more to know for that. What you should know is why the iodine is taken up, the physiology of the production, what drives and inhibits production of the hormone (t4/t3) etc. also after taking radioactive iodine you actually are not supposed to be by small children and such apparently.
