Silly question but how does ranking works and how do you know who to rank 1-10.
Do you need to email program director or coordinator?
I am not that lucky for too interviews yet.
I had only 6 interviews so far and I can see myself 3 out of 6 but how do I know if they liked me or not.
One of my interview I was late for few minutes because their email was very confusing that interview starts at 11ish, is that a bad thing? I'm not making any excuse. But at the end of the interview they told me it's totally ok that I was late. That will be my 1st choice but I might messed it up already.

Applied on day 1 but did not get enough interview invites. Btw, DO student here with avg score

Thanks for the feedback.

You just rank in order of your preference. There’s no way to game it.

Thank you! can I email PD if i didn't get an interview invites yet? What is the best way to do? Or just wait and get rejected?

Go ahead and email. I wrote up what I did regarding this in this thread:

I did this even in January and got one. So maybe it’s not too late. Ya miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.

Thank you so much for your advise! Sent email to lot of programs yesterday and few were auto emails and some said just check ERAS and 2 programs said they are done with interviews. One program said they are still reviewing applications. I hope by sending 30 email I may get 1-2 interview invites.

Some advice on rankings. If only applying to a single specialty, simply rank them in you order of preference. If you don't match your #1 the system will try to place you in your #2 and so forth. If you are applying to two or more specialties (which almost every student should be doing today seeing how competitive match is becoming) then it becomes a little trickier. Say you are a borderline surgery applicant, and Peds is your parallel application, but you want to exhaust all possibilities of getting into surgery before you parallel plan kicks in, then rank your surgery programs top to bottom and when you get to the bottom of the surgery programs on your rank order list, repeat this with your peds programs. The algorithm will do everything it can to place you in surgery and you will exhaust every chance before it moves you on to your peds ranked programs. Finally, this can get more difficult if you have two specialties that are equally enticing. If you were perfectly happy with either specialty, you simply rank them by which program you would rather match with. The list may look random IE: surgery program 1, surgery program 2, peds 1, surgery 3, peds 2, peds 3, surgery 4 and so forth, but you are attempting to match your absolute favorite program in this scenario regardless of which specialty it might end up being in. Hopefully that makes sense!

Finally regarding contacting program directors, I know of very few that it would hurt you, but also very few that are influenced by it. That being said, reach out to them since it likely wont hurt you and MAY help you, even if that is only one program that alters their thoughts about you. Best of luck!

Usually you should be contacting Program Coordinators, NOT the PD directly. Contact whoever is listed as the contact person on ERAS/FREIDA or the program websites. I agree that you should not by default be contacting the PDs directly.

Occasionally the PD is the contact person on ERAS. Otherwise, I would always contact PC since this is their job.

I have contacted whoever is ERAS contact person. Just got an invitation for another interview. Hopefully it will work because this is only 2 hours drive from my family. They have sent me an email yesterday and my interview is next week. I'm excited. So it may have worked that I sent like 30 emails to the programs and it is one of them.

So happy got couple more interviews coming. I had sent few more letter of interest. I guess it did work.

When will be the last interviews? Is it end of January or they do some in February?

Total 8 interviews and out of 8, 1 will be out because on the east coast and I'm not willing to go there.
I would be happy if I get anywhere in top 4 of my choices out of 7.
How would I rank them?
Would it be wise to rank only 1-4? Not really interested in 5-7?
What should be the back up plan?
I hope I will get another couple more interviews.
How do you email programs that they are your number #1 rank?
The last interview I had told me they got 900 applications for 3 slots and we were the last one and they will not have anymore interviews.

I dont think its wise to rank only 1-4 unless you are prepared to SOAP.

I can't imagine not ranking my 5th, 6th, and 7th choices of what is offered to me and voluntarily taking an increased risk of not matching somewhere. If you'd rather SOAP into a research position or something completely unrelated to what you're wanting to do (or not even get to do that), then by all means...

Bold strategy Cotton….

Also, why would you even apply to east coast programs if you have no interest in going there and aren’t going to rank them?

That was mistake from my end. Most of my family friends are here in California/Nevada. I applied to lot of programs and that was one of them.

I would like to match and that's why I'm asking for help here. I don't want to go thru SOAP.
What specialty did you apply for? If you dont want to SOAP, I would recommend ranking every program you interviewed at unless you absolutely dont want to be there.

3 spots? Sounds like your going for a small/relatively competitive specialty. You'd be dumb not to rank every program on your list, including the one in the northeast which should be #8 on your list.

Family medicine. Thank you for the advice.

Rank every program you interviewed at unless you would rather SOAP than match there. If that's 8, then its 8, if its 7, then its 7. I suspect it is not less than that. The fact that you only got 8 FM interviews, and there are >50 programs in CA and NV (unless you didn't apply to many of them) makes me suspect it will be in your best interest to rank as many programs as possible.

Thank you! I applied to every single program and I don't know what happened.

Is there a redflag or a bad LOR in your application? Seems odd to have so few FM interviews if you applied to all of them.
No red flag or bad LOR as far I know. My Level 1 was 500+ and Level 2 was lower 400+

The only issue I can see my level 2 low score but I passed, other than that I'm not aware of any issue.

I followed up with all the programs and they mentioned that they had very high applications this cycle.

I sent my app on 9/29 which was not late either.

No way this is possible, this is a troll post. I know of DO's with 400's/400's comlex's and even some with failures who applied to like 30-40 FM programs and got double digit FM interviews. OP also said one program got 900 applications for 3 spots, that's also unheard of in FM.. I don't know a single FM residency that has only 3 spots and FM programs don't usually get like 900 applications for 3 spots those are derm like numbers tbh.. Nice try at a troll... unless OP applied FM as a back up and that was obvious in the app(ie not having a single FM letter or not having an FM personal statement), this story sounds unbelievable especially if OP actually applied to every single FM residency with a 500+ comlex level 1.
