I heard that if you retake a class, AAMCAS averages it out with your old grade. How does that work? So if I retake a 5 unit course with a 4 unit course, got a C in the first, and got an A in the second, it averages out to a B? Also, do the units stack up?

Also, is there a unit limit with applying to med schools? I heard rumors that there's something like a 7 year limit...

That's not true... for DO it does not have to be the same couse # and most certainly does not have to be the same school. What you have to do is be able to prove that the course content is the same. Sure, taking the exact same course over again is the easiest and safest route, but you can retake at another school and get the grade counted.

I called Western and asked a few months ago and this is the answer they gave me if I recall correctly. Can someone else please confirm? I'm currently retaking general chem series in university (vs community college where i originally took it)

Confirmed.

Over the course of about 25 years, I've taken the 1st term of general chemistry with lab at 3 different schools, all with different course numbers, one on semester, two on the quarter system.

In AACOMAS, I listed these as the same course, repeated twice. AACOMAS respected it.

Which was stupid. I got A's all 3 times. D'oh. Shouldn't have listed them as repeats.

so it turns out in order to retake my physics class, it would have to be at a community college beecause thats the only way I can get the hours to match up.

How bad is that gonna look if I retake a SINGLE class at C.C.

I should mention that I previously took physics 2 at C.C.

If I get an A, will it hurt me? because, i think the risk might be the reward as long as it can only help me and not hurt me assuming I can get an A

I think some of these questions can actually be answered by contacting an AACOMAS rep directly by phone. That said, it actually depends alot on whoever is verifying your application to your transcript. They usually take a look first on the course title, if it's from different universities it's pretty obvious it'll be a different course # but if the course titles are the same, and you mark one as R01 and the other as L01, then he'll probably accept it. It really doesn't matter if it's from a CC or not in AACOMAS' mind, if it's general physics, it's general physics that you've taken.

Now for andres' question. If you list them both as the same title, R01/L01 etc. theres a chance he'll pass it by, there's a chance he won't and correct it for you, or he'll send the application back to you marking the discrepancy. It's really up to you if you want to take the chance and whether you're okay with doing this. This is purely based off my own experiences with AACOMAS' primary application.
