basically i collect patients washing from the wards and take it down to the laundry, I'm a first year pre med so this would be one of my first clinical EC's and hopefully would grow into something better over time, btw I'm told it does come with a fair amount of patient contact.

Avoid.

Your time is better spent shadowing a local doctor who is new to the area. New doctors also may look for volunteers to man the front desk, especially on weekends.

You may also want to see if you can be in patient transport. At least you can visit all the departments that patients need to go to when you volunteer.

Agreed. There are much better things out there, such as the shadowing opportunities that TopSecret mentioned. Even clinical volunteering-wise, there are better positions.

...by the way, I definitely approve of your new icon, TopSecret! Nicely done!

Thank you. 🙂

Also, the clinical opportunities are not usually advertised. You have to be assertive and take the initiative. Contact the new doctors in the area and ask if they could use a volunteer. Most likely they will say yes.

That's just cheap labor for free.
Your time is better spent elsewhere. You're not gonna get promoted to "Senior Collector" where you get to make decisions with doctors or anything.
Good luck!

i'd say see if you can get some sort of shadowing position like the other posters say above.

HOWEVER...if you cannot, take this job and make it work for you. it's not what you know, but who you know. make friends with docs you come into contact with regularly and use this position as a stepping stone (a really short one hopefully). and who knows, interacting with patients is pretty fun. the job sounds so kush that you could probably waltz around and meet people/hear stories/get perspective/build a network.

look for something else, but keep this in your back pocket.

It's probably not the greatest clinical type of volunteering or clinical experience possible, but I think it's better than nothing and volunteering can only help and not hurt. I suggest doing it, and also shadowing when you have time. Your only a first year so you have the time to get a lot of different EC's and the way I look at it is that your opportunity is better than nothing.
