Do residency programs look at your grades? If so, do they see actual percentages or just HP, P, F? How do they compare people from schools with different grading rubrics?

How much do residency programs care about your grades? Do they give more weight to your Step I score?

Residency programs see what is on your transcript (letter grades such as P, H or F and A,B,C etc). They also see your ranking (usually in the MSPE) and they see your Board Scores. If you school has an AOA, believe me, you are ranked because they see if you are AOA or not.

Your school's transcript will likely just list the grade category (i.e. "HP" "P", whatever). However, the MSPE (dean's letter) has charts breaking down the percent of students in each category.

most people assume residencies aren't going to waste a whole lot of time figuring out the difference between an "H" at one school and an "H" at another

Residency programs care very much about your 3rd year grades. That and Step 1 scores are the two most important factors in your application. They care very little about 1st and 2nd year grades. This has been discussed ad nauseum on this forum.

Step 1 and 3rd year clerkship grades matter the most. If your school uses H/HP/P/F, that is what they will see. No numbers.
