I have heard of some people starting a PhD and then applying for MD in the same school....or people starting an MD and then apply for grad school as well (versus applying as MSTP). How does this work? Can someone give me more information about it in terms of applications, requirements, restrictions, etc. Thanks!

I added on the MD/PhD application after getting accepted to Minnesota's MD program. It just involved turning in the MD/PhD paperwork. I know to Minnesota at least you can apply for their MD/PhD program during your first year of med school - I think it's the exact same app.

Good question...Path2dr seems to know alot on this topic..ask him/her. k

Hello Everyone!
A number of schools around the country will allow PhD students to apply to the joint MD/PhD program after a year or two in the PhD program. A few schools are: Cornell, Yale, Penn, GW, Vanderbilt.

There are other schools I'm sure but I know of these because 3 of them are on my list. If I think of others, I'll post them!

University of Minnesota-Twin Cities will let you apply during your first year of medical school.

Just wondering if anyone had the websites containing this info? Thanks!

I think that most of the schools don't "offically" post this information, it's kinda of hush hush. But I would call the adcom office. Let me know what happens. I'm curious to.

I know Penn will let grad (PhD) students apply... I was there interviewing the other day, and there was a grad student who was applying. I also know that UT-Houston takes apps from MS1's. I'm not sure that it's hush hush so much as the fact that most people who have already started MD or PhD work aren't as interested in MD/PhD programs. A matter of marketing, really.

Just look on the web site of the medical school you're interested. in. Like others said, it won't jump out at you with a title "PhD to MD" program although it could as in the case of Yale and Vanderbilt.

Hi guys,
My $0.02 from my school (BU):
They don't let you apply to the MD program if you are in the PhD program.
They DO let you apply to the PhD program if you are in the MD program.
I am in the PhD program and am applying to the MD program because I am defending in the summer of 2004. BU does let you defer admission if you have not completed your PhD by the time you have to start med school.
I guess one could apply to medical school while pursuing a PhD and leave the PhD program (if you don't care so much for it anymore) to attend medical school. The tricky part is trying to figure out when you'll be able to defend and get all the paperwork done before med classes starts.

Does anyone know if Harvard Med allows grad students from MIT to apply for M.D.-Ph.D.? I really love the bioengineering research that is going on at MIT, but it looks like the Harvard-MIT program is not going to give me an interview.

Also, I have heard of people who take really long leaves of absence from med school for a variety of reasons. Is it possible to take a 4-5 year leave of absence to attend grad school, then come back to finish up med school?

Thanks,
Chem E Chick

I can't speak for all schools, but where I'll be doing med school (U of MN-TC) they will absolutely allow me to do that. In fact, my backup plan to the MD/PhD program (MSTP) is to just take a 2-3 year leave of absence to do my PhD in pharmacology. I've gotten verbal permission from the medical school, the director of graduate studies, and my current PI.

Are you referring to your institution, BU? If not, then this is not a true statement. On the web site of Vanderbilt, for example it specifically states that they will accept PhD students to the MD/PhD program. Here's the link to the Vanderbilt wepage.

http://bret.mc.vanderbilt.edu/mstp/html/frame_app.htm

"Students who have completed one or more years in the School of Medicine may also apply for admission to the combined degree program. Graduate (Ph.D.) students may also be admitted to the program, contingent upon their acceptance into the School of Medicine. "

Thanks, Adcadet. I appreciate the information.

Does anyone have information about the UC schools..specifically UCI? I've been trying to reach someone in the college of medicine to get info, but they're giving me the run-around and I haven't been about to talk to an actual person. I am trying to figure out whether it is possible for me to apply for med school while in the middle of grad school. I don't know if this will help, but the grad program that I am in is in the college of medicine.
