Is it computerized? Also, what percentage of applicants receive secondary invites? thanks

Yeah, I've been wondering about that myself. I have pretty decent stats from a top 10 school but was rejected the day after calling them about a potential secondary application. the secretary said she would notify me shortly and sent the rejection via email. totally lame

I'm not sure about Davis specifically but I heard a lot of the UCs use a GPA/MCAT formula (supposedly with MCAT weighed heavier) to screen for secondary applicants.

i dont think there is a formula they use to screen. i do think they actually take a look at everything (amcas, gpa, mcat) before giving out secondaries....

There is no formula here at Davis. They do require a minimum of a 7 for each subject of the MCAT, but other than that, there is no cutoff.

For GPA, you probably need over a 3.5 to be competitive, but I'm almost positive that they won't automatically reject you if your GPA is less than that.

Remember, though, just because there is no cutoff value, you still need pretty good numbers to be competitive to Davis, and to any med school in California.

Hope that helps!

just to add a bit, they do have a standard that will automatically get you an interview tho. If you have a certain high enough MCAT/GPA combo, you will automatically get a secondary, or at least they did 2 years ago. but pretty much from talking with the class, there's a HUGE range of GPA's and MCAT scores, so there may be some luck involved for getting that secondary.

I know a few doctors on their ADCOM and Davis, like most of the other UC's emphasize the personal statement. Your numbers have to meet a certain criteria, but they actually read PS's prior to granting secondaries.

Like every other medical school, first they take all applications and pin them to a wall. Then, they buy hookers and get completely drunk on tequila. Afterwhich, each ADCOM member picks up a dart and throws it at the wall until all darts -- one for each interview slot -- have been thrown. Darts not striking a file become spaces reserved for URMs.

The process is repeated after interviews.

gather admissions staff and committee in an open room. turn on large fan. throw all application in the air. admissions folks run around and try to catch applications. those applications caught are granted interviews. those that hit the ground are rejected.

from what i hear, they sure reject a lot of great candidates for me to believe they have a logical system. and they are the harshest rejectors, often sending their blunt and harsh rejection e-mail on the same day the secondary application is received.

If I may ask, what was the specific range of GPA's and MCAT in your class?
