IM PGY-3 here. Last day of residency is June 30. I plan to start working on July 1. Unfortunately I got a job in a state that requires three years' residency for license. Even more unfortunately my program will only release completion certificate on/after July 1 to FCVS for license application. That means I will be unemployed and without medical insurance for who knows how long period. I wonder how early will other programs release completion certificate to residents?

Will you have your medical license by July 1? Those take time (usually a few week) especially using FCVS. If you have to wait till you eager your completion cert to send app for license, you will not be licensed by July 1.

You are eligible for cobra for health insurance but it is expensive. Blue cross has short term health insurance that is very reasonable.

FCVS is always sending me verification forms to verify a resident's training. We do include expected graduation dates. Have never had a resident need their completion certificate to get a license.

Thanks for the replies. The problem is my program will only verify the "completion of residency" to FCVS after July 1. I do not know if this is norm in other programs. It would be very kind of them if they could send out the FCVS verification form a little earlier.

Looks like I will have to buy blue cross/cobra insurance myself.

With cobra, you have up to two months after you are done to buy it. You can just hold off on the purchase until you need it. By that time, you might have your license.

I totally agree with Frederica. We complete forms like this all the time, and every state (that I've ever dealt with) and FCVS allows us to enter an "expected" completion date. The only time I would be uncomfortable doing so would be someone in a remediation program where their graduation is in jeopardy. And, even if I completed the paperwork and then a resident failed to graduate, nothing would stop me from contacting FCVS and updating them to your status.

In any case, if the state you're applying to requires 3 years of training completion for a license, they won't consider your application until you actually finish your third year. But you should be able to submit everything else. Still, there will be a delay from the time you graduate until you get your license.

My state required 3 years completion so I could not send in the final app until the last day. My state did not require FCVS. It took 3 weeks then another 2 for the DEA app.
