My DO LORs were both written after sitting down and talking with the doctors one time. They were both knew my father though. (He is a neurologist and an MD.) I spoke with them over the phone and sat down with them and talked at length. I brought a copy of my CV, GPA calculations, MCAT, etc. The sole purpose of the meeting was to have them write my letters. Neither one of the DOs was really close to my father, so I guess it was kind of a professional courtesy for them to sit down with me. But, the letters were not an automatic thing. I did spend a lot of time speaking with them and they asked me a lot of questions about myself, why DO, why medicine, etc. It was kind of like an interview. I would imagine that you could do the same thing if you contacted a DO. I think I would just call one and tell them that you are applying to osteopathic schools and you need to sit down and speak with a DO to get more information and hopefully to get a letter of recommendation. I don't know if that is the proper etiquette or not, but it is what I would have done if the other way hadn't worked out. But again, the DO I was going to contact is in practice with my midwife, so I kind of knew her. So, unless you know a DO, I guess you will have to go through the phonebook until someone says yes. LOL!!! (j/k) I think I would just be open about the purpose of the meeting from the beginning so they know why you are really there. Oh, I also brought a list of the schools I was applying to with addresses. I offered the stamped and addressed envelopes, but they didn't want them. Hope this helps somewhat. Good luck!
