I thought MD and MBBS was equivalent for the most part, at least in the states. If he is not a pharmacist from India, he will need to apply and go through the PharmD program here. If he is a pharmacist, he will have to go through the process for foreign applicants to get licensed.

No but he would most likely be eligible to practice as a doctor after taking an equivalency test. Just out of curiosity, is there any particular reason your friend wants to go for PharmD when he already has a medical degree?
No, he'd have to go through residency after applying as an FMG. There are very few foreign physicians that are able to practice in the U.S. without completing an ACGME-accredited residency.
Not everyone shares your view of pharmacy. Some of us actually enjoy it and find it to be fulfilling.
There is a person in my class right now who was a doc in India but decided to become a pharmacist here.

Yeah, I'm not clear if the OP is saying his friend is a pharmacist or a medical doctor in India.
If medical doctor, he would not be able to be a pharmacist here without getting his Pharm D degree in the US.
If pharmacist, it depends, the exact process will depend on the state he is applying for license. Generally, he would have to pass the TOEFL (English as Foreign Language), FPGEE (pharmacy exam), & the law exam for the state he is applying for. He would also have to have the equivalent of a 5yr - 6yr pharmacy degree, 4yr pharmacy degrees are not transferrable to the US. He would probably also have to work as a technician/intern in the state he is applying for, the exact amount would depend on the state.
I am an Indian Pharmacy graduate. I have completed 2 Years of Diploma and than 3 years bachelors in India. Plus i was working in India as Pharmacist for long time.
