Hello all,

I was wondering how good are my chances of getting into dental school. I am almost finished filling out my AADSAS application. Reason why I am so late is because I don't want to put all of the beans in one bowl and apply to only one school. Even though I know it is really the only one I want to apply to. Here are my stats:

Cum GPA: 3.08
Science GPA: 2.89
DAT Scores: 20 AA / TS 20 / 16 PAT 😱

Degree: Chemistry w/ a minor in Biology

I have been volunteering in a chemistry lab for 3 years now with 1 publication and various acknowledgements on others. I have about 8 month experience volunteering in a dental office. I am confident that my letters of recommendations will be good - great. I don't know the deadlines for these schools but here is my list of interest. I don't plan on applying to everyone, just the ones you guys think I'll be more competitive at applying to. I am a resident of Louisiana.

LSU
Arizona
Howard
Indiana
Kentucky
Louisville
Maryland
Boston
Tuft
Missouri
Creighton
UNLV
Buffalo
Case
Temple
Tennessee
Virginia Commonwealth
WVU

I will be taking a couple of biology class this fall and spring. Any input is welcome. Thanks for the help guys!

Prolly not too good. I have the same dat, but a better gpa and got rejected by case and iu already.

Have you taken classes lately to raise the GPA? Even if you didn't do well in undergrad some schools will consider post bacc classes and "use" that GPA instead. I say that because some schools will weigh the most recent classes slightly more (looking for the upward trend), your DAT score is good but with a PAT of 16 some schools might still wonder....just a thought. I have a lower undergrad GPA too so I took some post bacc classes and was told I pretty much needed 20+ across on the DAT to be seriously looked at by schools. From the list of schools I'd defn take off some of the state schools unless you're are a resident or given preference so places like UNLV, Indiana, Kentucky, Buffalo, WVU should be taken off the list.

Also apply ASAP, it only gets harder later on in the application process. Also if you know the school you would like to attend (sounds like you do) contact them and see where you might stand against the other applicants or if there is anything else you can do right now to make you a more appealing candidate. Good luck

I think you may have a chance. although with your stats, i probably would have applied a little bit earlier. i guess keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best. gl to you.

I have already contacted the Dean of Admissions of the school I really wanted to go to. He has shown me around campus and we've exchanged numerous emails. He suggested I take more upper lvl biology classes, which I am doing in the next year, while I wait on responses from the dental school. Anymore suggestions will be appreciated!

Studied hard! Got my first DAT results back. I'm kind of skeptical with the scores... I actually thought I did better.

Should I apply the upcoming cycle or should I retest and enter into a postbacc enhancement program?

Can I get in with these scores??

1st: AA/TS/PAT: 19/19/22

sci GPA: 2.9
GPA: 2.76
postbaccGPA: 3.02

Master: HRM
Bach: Business
Cert: Dental Asst.

geez, how many threads are you spamming??? heheh

DAT looks alright, but even the postbac GPA seems like it could be higher... what schools are you applying to?

Let me ask my magic 8 ball...it says "My sources say no". There you have it; the 8 ball thinks you should do a post bacc and pull up that GPA.

ok...you just completely hi-jacked this thread...that was very rude. make your own thread to ask about your chances. but for kicks, i agree with hermey...you might consider looking into post bac.

If you're a resident of Louisiana I think you have a good shot there. If I remember correctly, Louisiana has one of the lowest, if not THE lowest, number of applicants.

I don't know... I think your AA is pretty good on your DAT...that should look great! The PAT score (same one I got the first time around) may be a bit low...but I wonder if the AA will cover that. 20 is EXCELLENT! Not being adcom, I have no clue of your chances or mine, but I think you may have a shot... I went for my Masters in bio when I thought my GPA might be too low for d-school. It gives you a lot of great experiences in research and most will cover your tuition and give you a stipend of some sort. I haven't been accepted yet to dental... but I'm hopeful!

Case is already sent out rejection letter for this 2007 cycle?? :scared:

Thanks for all of your replies. I am hopeful as well, even though my GPA is low. I know my application is not as competitive as it should, but hopefully they'll take into account that I am still taking classes to better myself. I really screwed up my final semester because I really wasn't focused. Hurricane Katrina had a little something to do with it. Anymore suggestions would be appreciated.
