haha! I too want to do OMFS (Hence my username lol)...The local orthodontist in my region said that ortho is the hardest...and that OMFS is a little easier - less competitive - because not EVERYONE was put on this earth to do that kind of work! Likewise, she told me that a TON of the dental students want to do GP...so, thats my $.02 lol🙂

OMFS programs are extremely competitive, in general most programs only accept about 2 applicants per year. The students that apply to this residency are usually in the top 10-15% of their class as well as the top 10-15% in their boards. Like the previous posters suggested, you should focus first on gaining admittance to a dental program before you start worrying about residencies. Also, dental school is much harder than undergraduate, so just because someone did well in undergraduate does not mean that they can expect to be in the top of their dental class. (Everyone in your class will be very smart, so reaching that 10-15% top of the class ranking is extremely difficult)

Aphistis - you seem to have an issue with me? I took your advice and clearly I have utmost respect for you and your achievements. In fact, I envy you for them. No use to be so discouraging and rude to me!!! I'm just a young adult trying to make something of himself just like everyone else in this world. I mean, I am sorry but I often get a little confidence...Why? In my family for someone to graduate high school is a major blessing..let alone enter college...and then even having the thought of going to professional school...The types of adversity that I have faced in this world have made me who I am..and although they have been extraordinarily difficult at times, they have made me a stronger person at heart..but thats another story....Seriously, I think your accomplishments are impressive, but downgrading me to bring yourself some laughter or retaliation is indeed really sinnicle. It's like Steven Covey said, "begin with the end in mind." It is good that you have a goal. You can't expect to achieve a goal without setting one first. Now pursue it wholeheartedly and ignore all the haters who constantly try to beat you down (there will be lots of them in d-school when they hear you want to be an OMS).

hey ou_jay; I truly appreciate those words. Through the years, I (just like many) have been confronted with many "haters" as you call them. I was told to not apply for the program I was accepted into by many due to it being a long shot (guaranteed spot in DS in which only 3 kids in my entire state gain acceptance as college freshman). I also was discouraged by many to run for the student senate president at my school - and by the grace of God - I got elected as the first Student Senate President that was not a 4th year student (I am junior this year with senior credits due to my double major). Ofcourse, there are people out there who will always have their doubts, but it is people like this that give me the motivation to succeed. I am not here to prove anything to anyone, but it feels great inside to know that among all those whom discourage me, there are a few like yourself to bring me back up. And for that, I truly thank you. Best of luck with your future endeavors, my friend. 😎
