How important are Anatomy and Physiology?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just wondering if they were important classes that dental schools really like? Also do they help out with what you learn in dental school?

That would be very school specific, but I'm sure all schools recommend it. I asked a friend in school now what class he wished he'd taken and A&P was the only one he said.

More biology couldn't hurt (unless you fail them all and it lowers your GPA significantly). Doesn't necessarily mean your chances will increase dramatically either, unless of course those classes are a requirement by the schools you are applying to.

I'm a non science major and have only the bare minimum pre-reqs. I don't feel at a loss in my application, but I do wish I had the time and money to take more science classes such as A&P and anatomy since you have to take them once in D-school anyway and the background could only help.

If you can get A's in both of those courses and their labs, that would look really good. More importantly, it would help you so much if you have previous exposure to the material before you go at it hardcore in dental school.

Yea see I really want to take these two classes but if I want to graduate in 3 years, there is no way I could fit those in with the requirements for my major and gen eds.

How would it look if I graduated a semester early(fall of senior year)? Would it look bad that I was taking a semester off before dental school started at all or affect my application?

Depends on the school, but most schools have a list of recommended courses and A&P almost positively will be on most. Gross is probably the most difficult course of D1 year, so it'd be silly to not take it bc you're afraid you'll get a B. First yr of dental school sucks, for sure I would take as many of the courses recommended by the schools that you think you have the best shot at an acceptance. My last semester I took classes that like micro, histology, path (classes you'll have in dental school ).

I've been told by a lot of dstudents that undergrad anatomy doesn't help you much in gross anatomy. On the other hand, I've also been told that biochem, histo and etc helps a lot.

As people have mentioned above, some schools require anatomy and physiology. In my case, I am taking anatomy right now just to better prepare myself for anatomy in dental school (to some extent).

take it. it makes life easier. dental students who say anatomy didn't help prob did poorly in undergrad anatomy or they took lower level anatomy

most dental schools only teach anatomy above elbow and waist. if you take undergrad anatomy, you cover less detail but you cover all of the body. dental boards cover everything on body even though extremity and below waist questions arent as frequent

if you wanna do well in pharm you gotta kno physio, anatomy, etc.

pharm -> biochem (if you wanna kno biochem, you gotta know organic) -> physiology -> anatomy

I've also heard that biochem and histo are most helpful, but since I have time during my gap year, I'm taking A&P as well.
