How important is it to take the prereqs at a 4 years University?

I am a post bac catching up with all the prereqs on my own. I wonder how important is it to take all the science courses at a 4 years university? I know that Michigan doesn't accept community college science courses but how about other schools?

I am not positive if I could afford to take them all at a university. Its just too expensive and its a pain in the butt that I won't be eligible for any grants just because I have a B.S which I didn't even earn in the states🙁. Community college is financially A LOT better for me but how far does it help me to gain admission?

Any experience with that? Please share.

Thanks for posting.

Doc Toothache is about to post a link

If you are gonna take 1~4, I think it's ok.
If it's more than 4 classes, then ur chance starts to go down.
I took English 1,2, bio1, chem1,2 and physics1; total of 6.
Schools like Tufts don't even accept 1 CC but I think many others still accept it.

This was the first thing that hit me when i considered towards going into dentistry. I have taken most of my prerequisites at CC. mostly because i was a PSEO student for 2 years. Spoke to admissions of the schools that i will be applying to next cycle and they said it's fine, as long as your gpa is solid. CC courses are considered easier, so you want to get those A's in chemistry and biology. I transfered to a University and it is definitely much harder. Good luck!

Thanks for the link Doc Toothache. According to your list University of Michigan would accept up to 60 credits from CC. I called the admissions two days ago and asked if they would accept any science courses from CC. They said no. So yeah thats confusing. Where do you take that information from?😕

Apart than that I have a Bs and a Ms from an international school. I applied for a secondary Bs to complete the prereqs and get loans along. Now, considering that I don't have any course work taken at a national university would it still be smart to take a couple science courses (Math, Organic chemistry, general chemistry, physics, biology) at a CC?

What do you guys think?

You certainly pay attention to detail but it appears you skipped the preliminary discussion and dove straight into the table. The answer to your first question is in the second sentence. You call the school, you are given advice but you seem to think that SDNers have more insight on what's the "smart"est thing to do.

If you've got your heart set on one of the schools that absolutly won't take CC credit, I think that's really the anaswer to your question - it will be hard, but a dream school is a dream school. If it's just one of many schools you're interested in, and the cc would be much more viable for you to do, go ahead and take the classes you have to there, do your best, and get solid DAT scores to match. Since it sounds like you've already gotten aa degree, and you're just mopping up the last few pre-reqs, I think Adcoms would have a bit more understanding than if it were otherwise - not to say that taking pre-reqs at a cc will doom you either way. Worked just fine for me.

Doc has a very good point as well, the school is the final answer on all of these questions, and if you're applying to 10-15 schools, it would only take you maybe an hour or two to call them all and get a real answer. I took a day and got the info from the schools I was interested in, and it was very insightful. You may find that many of the schools listed that claim to refuse cc credit on paper may be actually willing to take it (as I did), or exactly like you already did, that one that possibly lists that they do, actually doesn't.

Either way, I'm sure you'll get everything worked out fine, good luck!

I don't think it would be that bad to take prereqs at a CC as long as you take upper-level science courses at a university eventually (to show you can handle the work) and do well on the DAT.

Generally speaking you are right (Eventhough some schools seem to be strict about it). But in my case it might be too risky since I have my degrees (both Bs and Ms) from an international school. So they might wanna see if I could handle courses at a US 4 yr university (eventhough European universities are much harder in my opinion).

If you really want a good answer, simply call some of the schools you're interested in ask, it would take you maybe an hour top, and possibly save you months of frustration. Anything you read on the forums is mostly just speculation. You may find that some schools will even take some of your previous coursework.
