with the Associate Program Director as my attending . He really likes me and has said that he would love to "train me further". I am very keen on doing my IM residency at his program--which also offers a prematch.

My Q is--Does the Associate PD have a major say in selecting residents?
-- I have told him that I would love to train at his program. But, should I ask him about the prematch even before interviewing?or would it look like I am too desperate.

bdw-- I see myself as a pretty strong candidate-fresh grad/good scores/with rotations in the US and US LORs.

Thanks!

Hello guys?

I am an IMG and I did some of my US elective rotations with the Associate Program Director as my attending . He really likes me and has said that he would love to "train me further". I am very keen on doing my IM residency at his program--which also offers a prematch.

My Q is--Does the Associate PD have a major say in selecting residents?

Depends whether the associate PD is on the selection committee. At some programs they do sit on the committee, at other programs they do not.

-AT.

I would imagine that at most, if not all programs, the associate PD's are part of the selection process. It probably depends on the field, and the size of the program. In IM, Assoc PD's get at least 25-33% protected time by the program. You can bet that my assoc PD's are interviewing every interview day, ranking applicants, and have a huge say in the rank list. Having an assoc PD in your corner is a big positive.

Of course, I'm sure there are some programs where after the rank list is built, the chair tinkers with the list. Also, if for some reason the PD doesn't want you, it probably won't matter what the assoc PD says. This ain't a democracy.
