how is glucose transported in the body?

hi friends
i have a question. please answer it.

in the 2006 decks of physiology it is given that glucose is absorbed in the intestine by secondary active transporters driven by a sodium gradient

also in some other question it is given that active transport requires a transporter and energy. glucose is tranported across membranes using glucose transporters called glut .

also in facilitated diffusion substances are diffused down an electrochemical gradient.

so is glucose transported via facilitated diffusion or via active transport.
i'm guessing it is via active transport but i need to confirm it.

It is active transport( glocose). if u read GIT system in kaplan in physiology part , there is clearly given , somewhere. It has been a long time since i gave part1 . so just make sure.
 
Glucose is transfered from the lumen of the intestinal tract into the cells lining th elumen by co-transport (Na entering the cell down its concentration gradient and glucose following Na). The sodium concentration gradient is maintained by Na/K pump (requiring ATP) which pumps the sodium back out of the cell.

i will try to answer your question to the best of my knowledge....,here we go:

glucose cannot diffuse directly into cell,but enters by two transport mechanism.

1)facilitated transport
2)cotransport

Facilitated transport:mediated by 5 types of glucose transporters: glut1-glut5.These glucose transporters are tissue specific,glut 5 is abundant in adipose tissue & skeletal muscle and glut1 in erythrocyte but low in muscle.

In facilitated diffusion glucose moves with a concetration gradient ;i.e from a region of high glucose concentration outside the cell to a region of low glucose concentration inside the cell.


Cotransport:

Glucose also diffuses into cell by this method in which glucose entry into cell is against a concentration gradient (using energy).This is a carrier mediated process in which movement of glucose is coupled to concentration gradient of sodium which is traNsported into the cell at the same time.This type occurs in epithelial cells of the intestine, renal tubues,and choroid plexus.

Active transport of glucose occurs only: intestine , renal tubules and choroid plexus.
 
SGLT transporters (use Na), go from the Lumen to intracellular fluid. GLUT from Intra cellular to blood.

SGLT 2 is located at the proximal end of the nephron and used 1 Na to go with 1 glucose (this transporter has a low affinity but high capacity)...SGLT 1- is found at the distal nephron and carries 2 Na for every 1 glucose (has a high affinity and low capacity).

GLUT transporters in the basolateral membrane to not require Na.
