I'm a M1 and am curious what rad onc is. can someone kindly give a crash course on what rad onc is? thanks!!!

is it research-heavy residency/career? At my medical school, about 40% of MSTP graduates matched in rad onc in the past 2 yrs. ???
 
They are different fields. Radiation oncology is treatment of cancer with radiation from a linear accelerator, gamma knife, or brachytherapy (planting radioactive wires or seeds near the cancer).

Radiology is imaging using X-rays, CT, MRI, Ultrasound etc. There is also interventional radiology.
