Administrative Residency Day 1, Lesson 1

I am a small fish in a ridiculously large pond.

First off, I work full-time and go to school full-time and although I have been working in hospital administration for the past 3 years it really dawned on me how much knowledge I lack in regards to what keeps a hospital running. Honestly if this residency wasn't unpaid I wouldn't have had the balls to ask so many questions for fear of being fired. However, my first day was incredible and I am truly excited about immersing myself in the gritty aspects of Strategic Management of Health Systems.

Haha, kauldron, we do need our own forum. My administrative internship starts in two weeks, so in the meantime I am trying to brush up on a few things. I had one question though, what's the expected dress code for you over there? I was planning on wearing a suit everyday.

@ cocobobo, I've just been wearing a dress shirt, tie and dress pants. You cant go wrong with that. The male executives I've been meeting with have all just been wearing white dress shirts with ties.

where have some of your classmates obtained administrative internships?

I'll be starting an internship in about a week as well. I'm not taking it for credit since I'll be entering a MHA program in the fall. My preceptor did tell me that it's intended the kind of experience master's students do for their summer residency internships. Really excited! I'll be getting more details about what I'll be working on soon.

I started my internship this week, actually. I'll be in the radiation oncology department working mostly with cybernife and the synchrony tracking system. The first few days were very overwhelming, but all of the administrators, doctors and nurses made me feel welcome. There is already a littany of small projects they want me to dive into! Like classicvendetta, I will begin a MHA program this Fall.

I hope more MHA students share their internship/residency experiences as the summer progresses...

it looks very interesting. might apply when im done with my residency.

My 2nd week has been pretty intense. Spent monday with HR/employee relations, and the past 2 days with the nursing dept. I spent last night with the nursing supervisor... I had no idea that the staffing process could be so chaotic.
