I've only applied to MD schools so far this cycle but was thinking of adding in some DO schools too...I know the DO admissions cycle is longer, but when do most people typically have their AACOMAS apps finished by? Also, for people who applied MD and DO, is the AACOMAS app similar to AMCAS (like can you use the same personal statement for both or is there a different prompt?)

Apply prior to thanksgiving. DO cycle is longer, as you said. I'm a sophomore so I can't accurately answer the question of what AMCAS and AACOMAS have in common.

Here are the main differences between the MD and DO process:

-AACOMAS has a shorter verification time, on average.

-Most DO schools allow LORs to be sent through Interfolio. You can send them through AACOMAS but AACOMAS will send LORs to all schools on your list. AMCAS lets you pick and choose which schools get which LORs.

-AMCAS allows 700 characters for your activities. AACOMAS allows 600. I don't know if AACOMAS has most meaningful experience essays or not.

-AACOMAS has a school specific section that needs to be completed for every school. Some of these include secondary-like questions. Others include pre-req attestations.

-AMCAS is part of AAMC, so your MCAT is automatically uploaded to your app. You have to send AACOMAS your MCAT score.

-You can use the same PS.

@Goro Can answer when the best time to apply DO is.

No, AACOMAS does not have most meaningful experience essays.

You can use the same PS but last I knew, AACOMAS had a shorter word count than AMCAS does so you may have to make a few edits to it.

AACOMAS changed the character count this year to the same as AMCAS (5300 characters)

-AACOMAS does not have most meaningful experience essays
-AACOMAS has school specific sections where you have to select pre-reqs that meet each requirement set by the school (ex 8 hours of organic chemistry) or answer questions (could be similar to secondary essay questions or "have you ever applied to this school before?" or campus preference for schools with more than 1 location)
-You have to send your MCATs to AACOMAS
-The word count is the same for AACOMAS and AMCAS starting THIS cycle- they are both 5,300 characters
-You can list more than 15 activities on AACOMAS
-The hours for the activities section is slightly different between AMCAS and AACOMAS

So piggybacking off of this thread so I do not make a 1,000th thread on this topic. Disclaimer: Us pre-meds just need some reassurance sometimes 😉. @Goro I know you love these posts 😀

So I am not taking my MCAT until August 31st (Score release October 1st), I have most of my materials in and during September I plan to have my app verified and therefore will just be waiting to add my score. So let's say that AACOMAS is able to add my score my October 5th.

I am an Arkansas resident planning to apply to ~ 5 or so out of state schools along with ARCOM and NYIT-Jonesboro.

Planned schools to be exact: OSU-COM (I have a DO graduate from here writing me a very good LOR and I do have ties to OK), ATSU-KCOM (another very good LOR from alum and worked with 5 or so DO's that graduated from here), KYCOM, ACOM, VCOM-Auburn, William-Carey. These are my schools as of now pending MCAT.

The bottom line of all this: Money is not an absolute issue, but I also would like to not apply and "donate" to any of these schools due to it being late by the time I submit my primary in early October.

Here are my stats as of now to hopefully give anyone a better chance of judging:
~cGPA: 3.56
~sGPA: 3.42
~Biomedical Biology major with a Psychology Minor
~4-year college football athlete: Approx 3,000 hours and was also on a full scholarship (Division-2) also will have a very good letter from my coach (non-science letter)
~1,000 hours working at ER Tech
~Extreme desire to pursue rural healthcare
~150 Hours of shadowing (primary care, orthopedic surgery, general surgery)
~Many volunteering hours (backpack program and boys and girls club)
~MCAT is currently sitting around 500 with latest practice test, but I still am over a month out and feel confident to hit the 500-505 range

Sorry for the loaded post, any and all advice appreciated!!

I can't recommend WCU. Others are fine.

It will all depends on your MCAT score but I would suggest you to add one throw away school that way your app will be verified.
All the best!

One thing about AACOMAS that I dislike, however, is that it's difficult to put in shadowing experience unless you break it all down individually.

They changed them to match this year. ACOMAS and AMCAS both allow 5300 chars for the PS now.

I'm not sure if you are looking to specifically say in a certain region, but you could apply to all VCOMs or the new Lousiana campus as well (VCOM's average MCAT is a 499)

William-Carey has terrible match rates and LOW COMLEX pass rates, I wouldn't apply there
