I was wondering if any of you knew how late I would be able to send in the application and still be able to make the first round of interviews assuming I get my secondaries in right away. How late do you think is too late where it would affect my chances of getting in?

Suzy Q,

More than likely enough time has passed that you will not be included in the first interview spots, because the application cycle has been open for a month. The people who applied in the first couple of weeks will go out in the first batch from AACOMAS, will get the secondaries first, and will interview first if they are qualified.

It is not too late to apply. Is there some reason you are deliberately holding off? I recommend you apply now. It's still very very early in the cycle, and you're still likely to get in on the earliest interviews if you qualify. The longest I recommend waiting is the middle of July. Even then, the longer you wait, the more competitive the playing field, and the more your chances are going to be narrowed, especially if you have any weaknesses in your application.

I disagree with Wish...it is not too late already.

Because of a screwup at AACOMAS, my app didn't get to my school until mid August (I had submitted it early June--with transcripts already in-- and they got my MCAT scores in late June).

Even with that big delay, I got to in on the first day of interviews at OSU-COM.

That said, I wouldn't wait too long before submitting. Wish's recommendation of no later than mid-July is good. You can always call the schools you are applying to and ask them when they usually get their first batch of apps from AACOMAS. That'll give you a better idea of where you stand on time. Also, see if they will send you a secondary early. Some will send it once you tell them you have submitted your AACOMAS. Get your rec letters going now, too.

Getting everything in early is not a guarantee that you'll interview early. I'm assuming you have a high GPA/MCAT to get their attention. That will definitely improve your chances of an early interview.

Good luck.

what do you mean the application cycle has been open for a month? i thought the first day to submit was on june 1st?

SuzyQ,
The first day they started processing was June 1st, but they have been accepting applications all throughout May. But it is still very early in the application process, I wouldn't fret too much about it. I plan on getting mine's in this week.
Question: How early do you guys think I could get interviews if I'm taking the August MCAT( provided I do good on it)?

I was just wondering if I can send in my AACOMAS application without having my MCAT scores? I am taking the MCAT in August, but the rest of my application is complete...

yes, you can send in the application now. some schools may even send you secondaries since i guess almost all schools send secondaries to most applicants. they just wont be able to scheudle an interview until after they recieve your scores. i would definately send in your application before you take your mcats in august.

Dr Mom,

I think you may have misread my post. I didn't say it was too late to apply. In fact the opening line to one of my paragraphs says that it is NOT too late to apply. That would just be silly. People successfully apply in September even. I just recommend the sooner the better for Suzy Q.

If I was confusing, I apologize.

Suzy,

Don't worry about making the first round of interviews. however, if that is a big issue for you, most medical schools use a weighted average meaning that they priortize their applicants according to their strengths. If you have a strong application, your application will be fast tracked for review in the screening process. The ones that are not so good they hold and review at a later time.

Hi! I sent my AACOMAS app in mid-August. I thought it was too late, but the advice I got from a other people was to send back the secondary as soon as you get it. Of course it helps to send in everything early, but it won't hurt you.

suzyq: it is definetely NOT TOO LATE to apply. as i am the master of procrastination, i actually did not submit my AACOMAS application until NOVEMBER 15th last year. to make things worse, AACOMAS screwed up and did not even SEND OUT my application to the schools until MARCH 1st. i started getting secondaries the first week of march, procrastinated some more, and finally sent out all of my secondaries by APRIL 1st. i still got interviews and was accepted at AZCOM, CCOM, and was waitlisted at TUCOM. now, of course, i would NOT recommend doing what i did but i just wanted to let you know that even if you do not get in for the FIRST round of interviews, it is not the end of the world. and obviously the sooner you get the AACOMAS application in, the better your chances are of getting into your first choice school. so unless you have a reason for waiting, might as well complete and submit it as soon as is possible for you (just so happened that i couldn't get motivated to finish my personal statement until november!) GOOD LUCK!

Schools start interviewing in September.

You order in the interview is partially based on how good your application is and partially on how early you send your application.

If you want to be in the early interview spots, you need a good application and you need to send it out ASAP.

I sent out July 3rd and didn't get an interview invite until end of October. My application was fairly competitive.

Earlier the better.

Good luck to you!

i actually sent ion my aacomas in jan and got invited for interviews by dmu and wetsern in feb and was accepted in march....but of course, the earlier the better

Earlier the better, but I had no trouble getting interviews when submitting my aacomas in December.
