The most recent thread I found on this was from 2001. So I thought it was safe to ask.

I know each school is probably different, but I'm just curious about the time it typically takes to receive an II once your app is complete for a school. do some people get II's within days?

For most of my schools, my secondaries and everything else are done, but because of my "future test date," the bulk of my apps wont be considered actually complete until I get my score in late august. but when that day comes and my apps are finally complete, I just want to have a better idea of what to expect. Obviously if I get rejected right away, then that's that. (do a lot of schools do that, btw?)

BUT if I receive neither a rejection nor an II right after completion (let's say within a week), when would be the best time to:
1. assume that they have in fact reviewed your app but just havent decided yet if they want to interview you. and
2. send an update letter or something of that nature to help "convince them" to invite you. One month with no II? two?

(obviously i'm going to update schools as new experiences happen, but on things like daily volunteering, I plan to compile a certain amount of hours before sending an update, so there will be leeway to sort of "time" the sending)

Thanks!

There's a reason you weren't able to find a thread about this. Time frame from completion to II is so variable it's ridiculous. Depends on date completed, specific school applied to, quality of applicant, number of other applicants, etc. There is no numerical answer here.

Depends on the school. Stop trying to put a reasoning to it or you'll drive yourself nuts. It's too early in the cycle for an update letter unless you did something incredibly substantial over the summer.

Some schools don't have software that will permit review of applications of within months. Others do not let the sun set on an application. Even after an application has been screened, you may not receive further notice depending on the stratum into which your application has been sorted. In summary, it's quite variable!

well that's still helpful to know! 🙂 (because personally I wasnt aware of the huge variability before you just said that). at least now i'll know not to just assume i'm doomed after like the 2 month mark or something.

Oh, definitely not planning on sending an update anytime soon. I was just thinking ahead. And I know I know, you're right. I shouldnt go nuts. but as I said above, knowing I shouldnt expect anything is in itself, going to soothe my neuroticism. (. . . slightly).

thanks all!

At my school, the turn-around time between receipt of secondary and II is about six weeks. Your mileage may vary.

Word of warning: unless schools specifically state they welcome LOI or updates, do NOT send them. It will tag you as someone who either can't follow simple directions, or feels so entitled that you can ignore the rules.
