Does anyone know how long PT observation hours are valid for? Due to current career obligations (active military), I will not be applying to a DPT program for about 6 years - however, can I start accumulating volunteer observation hours now? For applications, do they like the observation hours to be current within a certain timeframe (completed within the last year, 5 years, etc)? I realize that this will probably vary from school to school, but if there are any general trends on this subject, I would appreciate any insight. Also, any suggestions on how to record hours this far out? Thanks everyone for your help!

I would like to think that it lasts for as long as you live! As long as they are verified by a licensed therapist, you should be fine!

Most observations hours need to be verified by a LPT. An evaluation form of the observer usually accompanies the verification. So if you can keep in contact with these PT's and are confident that they will remember enough about you when you apply, go for it.

Also contact the programs that you're interested in and ask the question directly. Keep in mind, however, that things may change in six years.

Ive applied to some schools that say your observation hours are only good for one application period. EX: So whatever you got for the 2011-2012 application wouldn't be good for the 2012-2013 application process. I'm not saying this is all schools, but I've heard some schools do that.

Thanks for the replies so far.

In regards to this: "So whatever you got for the 2011-2012 application wouldn't be good for the 2012-2013 application process. I'm not saying this is all schools, but I've heard some schools do that." Could you expand on that a little bit? Is that only if you were re-applying - for example, if you submitted hours for an application in '11-'12, you couldn't use them again if you re-applied in a future year? However, I assume that if I accrued observation hours in 2012, and have never applied to PT school anywhere in my life, that I could use them on my application 5 years down the line?

I just want to ensure that any effort I put into observation hours now will still be valid come application time. Thanks.

yes, thats what i mean by the observation hours and re-applying. if you havent applied before then all your hours could be counted, but if youre reapplying then you would need new hours. Now, thats not true for all programs, but I have come across a couple prgms that have said this. So take that as you will. As for your PDF form, idk bc im not opening it. Nothing against you personally, but I just dont open things like that on public forms like this and partly bc your ID is member 0785- seems kinda generic- but PTCAS has forms for you to fill out observation hours and then they will mail it to the PT you observed under to confirm these hours.

Haha 0785 is my birthday, but that's alright. I promise it's legit, but I understand...made me laugh though.
