Hey guys,

I was just getting some opinions on how long it took to do grade replacement courses? I was looking specifically at the University of New England ones mainly because they offer all the courses that I would need. I have a plan on doing about 4 to start off with. I am going to be taking my mcat on August 26th and start preparing, but I have a few courses (mainly the Ochem's) to try and raise my GPA (science and cumulative) to a 3.2 at the least. If I do well on my MCAT, I was planning on submitting my application sometime in October-November, but I want to get the courses done and on my transcript so that I can apply.

Thanks for all your help!

Are you doing post-bacc retakes, or is this going to be part of a full-time course load? You want to be careful not to overdo the classes while studying for the MCAT, because there will be a trade-off somewhere and you're at the point where you need to do well in pretty much everything you do from here on out. If you have some inorganic chemistry and/or physics or other MCAT-tested classes, it may be a good idea to try one of those out during the summer to serve as a quick review/make your studying a bit easier in that subject. Lastly, it sounds like perhaps this cycle isn't going to be the best one to apply, since your GPA will still be a bit marginal, and the MCAT will have a large impact...October/November is pretty late to apply, so I would recommend gathering up some experience/volunteering/EC's etc while strengthening up those numbers and applying next cycle. Keep in mind, however, I'm no expert, so I'm sure many other SDN gurus will have a little bit better advice to give. Good luck!

I'm not doing any post-bac retakes, it just a few grade replacment courses because my gpa is low 2.7 due to just me taking too many courses at once/ not studying properly. I just graduated college so I would have some time on my hands, but I realized that when I graduated was a little harsh with the timing! That actually does make sense, after looking at some MCAT's replies to how hard the new MCAT is, I think I will do if any only one grade replacement during the new MCAT if any. I thought that October-November was a good time to apply for DO honestly from reading the treads, but I think it will ultimately come down to my MCAT! I'm hoping to improve my EC's a little bit by shadowing a DO doctor and getting a letter of recommendation from them. I'm not sure my EC's are too bad though, I've worked in research labs and have worked in an hospital from almost two years now, but it is by no means the 100 hours or whatever some people had to get in. Hopefully I can kill my MCAT and then figure out what to do about my grade replacement courses. My final grades haven't even come out yet so I'm not sure what to do until they do. But thank you for your help, any another advice would be much appreciated!

You have no MCAT and your gpa is a 2.7. You're hoping to grade replace up to a 3.2. Your target GPA is still really low. I think you'd be best served by not applying this year and fully dedicating yourself to grade repair for the next 1-2 years. This isn't going to be a quick fix.

Also do your repair coursework at a local CC/state university. Try to avoid the online classes (for many reasons). As a side note, make sure that your credit hours for each class match or exceed the original course.

Okay thank you so much! I'll just wait then, best to be ready and get in then apply with some wishful thinking!

No problem! Make it your goal to be ready to submit on opening day for AACOMAS in 2016. Get that GPA up with grade repair at your local CC (most have Orgo) and knock the MCAT out. Good luck!!!
