Hi,
I am finding it hard to remember the little details from past exams, i.e. origin of the pudendal artery and nerve.

How long did it take you to forget everything from anatomy? I still know some of the major stuff, such as extremities and such.. but honestly, how much of this will be floating around in the OR when I'm in 3rd year Surg rotation?
I feel like a waste of life.. Btw, I am passing the class with flying colors.

Pudendal nerve, huh? That's somewhere in the crotchal region, right?

But yeah, took me about 36 hours or so. I remember some dermatomes, though.

Stuff was falling out of my head as I was scrambling to finish the final

I can't wait for boards 🙂

I seriously kid you not. You take a summer off and by the time school starts back up, you will forget the vast majority of all that is anatomy. The good news is that it will be faster relearning the stuff the 2nd time around.

This is actually quite an interesting post. I'd also like to know how long it took most other people to forget anatomy. My roomate swears that after our Final Exam, it only took her a few weeks of doing nothing that caused her to forget.

Where's the liver?

It took about 2 pitchers for me to forget everything from anatomy. I better relearn it considering I'm teaching it to first years this summer!

After 15 beers I forgot everything.

Hahaha, that's great.

I saw the first post then sat here for about 30 sec trying to figure out what the hell the pudendal nerve and artery were. Then I came up with the same thing you did.

We have a tradition known as "Post Gross Toast". Its held the night of the last anatomy test. The anatomy professors even came to the bar and had a few drinks with us.

After that night I forgot most of it...

I think it will come back quickly though...

branch of the anterior div of the internal iliac (IN CASE you were wondering)

any tips on how to keep anatomy fresh? I don't know how much of this will truly be needed but at the same time its such a useful knowledge base, hate to lose it.

Review it from time to time in your current context... e.g. we are doing bugs now.... we just finished respiratory bacteria/nematodes etc so if you want to keep it fresh, take the netter out (or Moore..which ever you prefer) and review the lungs portion...similarly for GI bugs quickly go over the anatomy of that region....for STD go over the relevant region etc.... you get the picture

Our anatomy instructors were awesome and did a really good job of making this subject fun....so your associatoin with the subject might be different depending on your experience..... 👍

my anatomy knowledge had a half life of 2 days.

arteries? other than the big ones, forget about it.

Hi there,
I am a surgery resident so you know that I live my anatomy on a daily basis. If I had to take a Gross Anatomy exam right now without review,I would probably fail it and I honored Gross Anatomy.

Surgical anatomy is far diffierent from Gross Anatomy so I know my surgical anatomy cold. This comes from daily review. I study my operative atlases and I keep the Netter atlas around. Before I do a case, I review what I am going to need for the case.

You study for your class exams, review for the boards and keep reviewing for everything else that you have to do. Just before you scrub a case, have a look at a surgical atlas. If you don't know the cases that you will be scrubbing, review the most common things like Calot's triangle, the inguinal region and inguinal hernia repairs, opening the abdominal cavity and mobilization of the colon and rectum. If you have these things down well, your surgery clerkship is going to go smoothly. Check out Zollinger's!

Good luck!

Seventeen minutes-- the amount of time it took from the end of the final to find my car.

But it comes back, in the oddest ways, when I need it, or else I go look it up.
(I do remember where most of the big pieces are-- heart, lungs, like that).

Thank God anatomy is a "low-yield" subject on the boards! I did well in anatomy but hated every minute of it (except the eye, of course). I do remember random stuff here and there but most of it is gone in some deep, dark corner of my brain.

We do, however, get pimped on anatomy during OMM class. It's a nice refresher, in some ways...
