Hello guys,

I am looking for a place to live in the Queen's area, and Forest Hill seems like a nice area and is well priced. I would like to find out how long does it take to travel to NYU from Forest Hill during the traffic hours? Thank you!

I live in FH. If you take the express at 71st and Cont. it is about 25 - 30 min to 52nd and Lexington and then about 8 min once you get on the 6 going south. If you live close to the train station I would say door to door is 45 - 55 min depending on how soon the trains show.

Thank you YellowSnow for the help.

Also, what is the estimated fare cost to take the transit to NYU and back home per week?

Can you give me more areas that I can check out in Queens? I tried Craig List and there are many rooms with decent prices in Queens. But I am not sure which areas in Queens are considered safe?

I checked out on-campus housing, and they are just too expensive for my taste ($1500/month 🙁). I just want a safe and quiet place to sleep/make food/take shower, nothing too fancy. Thank you.

Just my opinion but FH is one of the most convenient places to live. If you take the train you can buy an all you can ride pass for $80 / month (obviously, $20 per week). Astoria is popular but I have never got off the train there so I don't know first hand. Kew Gardens is more affordable and has an express stop but it is even farther away than FH. If you live near the station in FH the commute isn't that bad. If you have to take a bus to the station that makes things more complicated as you never really know when a bus might show up.

If you opt for the express bus then you can live farther from the station but it costs $40 per week. I like the express but because I can get my laptop out and study. This isn't possible on the train.

I can't really recommend any other areas in Queens, haven't looked around that much. I want to note that I am married and have a kid so it doesn't burn me that I'm not in the city with all of the single people going out and stuff. If going out is a priority for you it might be better to stay in the city.

Forest hill is one of the most attractive neighborhoods in Queens. Because Queens was devloped later on in the history of NYC, it was made with transportation in mind (you can literally get from any part of Queens to another part in less than 15 minutes), and to the city in anywhere from 35-45 minutes. The safer parts of the area in my opinion is Forest Hill, Elmhurst, Fresh Meadows, College Point, Flushing, and parts of Jamaica.
