So, I'm wondering if i'm spending too little or too long on essays. They are the types of essays that I could write and rewrite forever. So, a 250 word essay, how long?

15 minutes or so. bit more for something like "why this school"

Meh, it depends on the prompt and the character limit. I usually can refit essays I've already written in an hour or less. New essays take anywhere from 1-3 hours, if I feel industrious.

No less than 1 week. It's an arduous process of draft -> first final -> self-loathing -> second final -> redo draft -> reconsider motivation for medicine -> research possibility of law school -> third final.

i can imagine you saying that like in the Hot Fuzz movie style of speaking.

2 weeks of drafting, writing, not writing, writing, erasing, and not finishing until you least expect it.

Procrastinate for a week, spend half an hour taking notes, spend half an hour writing, spend half an hour editing.

I usually would spend about an hour on any given essay, leave it for a day, go back and reread to make sure nothing sounded weird, then sent them off.

do you all find yourself sometimes dumbing down certain words just to fit in the character limit?

I've done it a few times. Instead of writing "blah blah blah profound and exhilarating blah blah" it ends up "blah blah blah good and exciting" and I'm like: wahoo I got rid of X characters!! Go me!

Just wondering if anyone else is doing this, or perhaps I really do have no verbal skills and should just start practicing "would you like fries with that?" or creating taglines for http://icanhascheezburger.com/.

wow you guys are awesome...it takes me like a whole day to write a single paragraph

I love that website, though! I also enjoy www.cuteoverload.com and http://roflcat.com

this is the best post ever

For my top few choices, I took a few days. For the rest, no more than a day or two. Often, I simply recycle bits and pieces of my essays and apply them towards other schools.

Some time worrying about it and 10 minutes writing it.
Once I have completed a task it physically sickens me to look it over or redo it so I have my fiancee look it over and I'm done. The whole process takes about a month.
