How long should I wait before calling a program about my application status?

I applied to a few additional programs which downloaded my application around the 13th of November. I'm just wondering how long I should wait to hear back from them before I call and ask if my application has been reviewed. I hate to be pushy since I did apply so late, but I don't want all the interview dates to be filled if there is a chance that I would get an interview this late in the process. Thanks!

Not that I have any data to support this, but I would say at least a month. If its getting close to the completion of interviews, I might suggest moving that up a bit.

However, in your case its more like a week because I'll bet nothing happened during the week of Thanksgiving and probably the first day of this week.

So, is it time to start sending out emails to programs you have not heard from? If yes, how long should the email be and what should it contain (updates to application, interest in program)?

Also, do I call the office, or email the PD directly?

Depends on what you are applying for and what their deadlines are. If its surgery and the app deadline was November 1, and you haven't heard yet, then a two paragraph email with updates (if any) and continued interest in their program should suffice.

If its a specialty which has a later deadline and they are still reviewing apps, then you might wait another week or so.

Remember if you send an email or call, you can only do it once.
