My premed advisor told me that one should not hold more than two acceptances, ie that you should decline acceptances as you recieve new ones so that you never hold more than two. Someone else said you could hold onto more if you can't decide and are waiting for financial aid info and second look weekends. Any thoughts? What have others been told?
Thanks!

Do whatever feels right for you. Some people know for sure where they want to go so after receiving their acceptance at their #1 choice they decline everything else. Others operate differently.

I think the general rule is that holding on to more than 5 acceptances then you are considered a hogger.

However 2nd look weekends and financial aid are very important so before you start turning down places - make you sure that you will have no regrets with your choices.

I'm holding 16 acceptances.

Oh wait, that's how my dream went. I wish I was holding any at this point. +pissed+

But wait, there's still hope, right? :scared: 😴 👍

I'm holding 3 now and I don't plan to hold more than 3 at any given time...

I'm holding 2 and waiting on their scholarship committes' decisions. . . 😀

You can have as many as you want until May 15th, which is when you are only suppossed to have 1. This is also when the schools you have acceptances will know what other schools you are holding an acceptance to. So hang onto as many as you really need to while checking out things that can change your mind about going there such as $$$, housing, location, etc... However once you are sure you aren't going to go somewhere, make sure you withdraw as soon as you make a decision.

I had 2, but gave one up so far, when I determined I really didn't like where the school was located.

2 because i want to see how my luck with my cali schools go.

I'm hold on to the only two I have....financial aid stuff. But I will surely drop one by May 15th.

I'm holding onto the only acceptance I have thus far.

Yeah I think the courtesy is for applicants to hold no more than 2-3 acceptances at once. Even before May 15th. Schools have access to where you have deposited/accepted offers by February 1st (I learned this from admissions at Jefferson).

It actually brings up an interesting point -- would Penn State take someone that got into WashU already?

I am holding onto 4 because I want to see my financial options.

currently 2, but I will be giving up my downstate acceptance shortly.

I think applicants as a whole tend to hold on to most of the acceptances until May 15th, so that's why most waitlist movement occur at that time, if any.

It's more ethical to withdraw early from schools you're definitely not interested, but I think schools also in a sense want you to seriously consider them before making the decision. So don't feel pressured to make the decision right away (Though some schools have done that in the past from what I heard).

I've withdrawn from 3 schools after I was accepted, and am only holding 1 right now. I think thats only fair unless finances will be a big factor in your decision. As for me, I would go to the school whose acceptance I am holding over the others even if I could go free to the others.

I think people here have hit on some pretty good points. It's courteous to hold onto as few acceptances as possible, but sometimes it takes a while for financial aid info to come back. Also, waiting for non-rolling acceptances can be a factor. I'm holding onto 4 acceptances until I get financial aid info and news from my non-rolling schools. I don't have a definite "first choice," and I would seriously consider going to any of the schools where I was accepted, so I don't want to give up any acceptances until I hear how much they'll cost me and whether I got into Pitt and Penn. In my case, I'd pick either of these 2 non-rolling schools above a lot of the schools where I was already accepted, but I have to hang onto the rolling schools in case I don't get into the others. I don't know how many other people are in the same boat, but I figure there will be a bunch of withdrawals after the non-rolling acceptances come out in March.

you're premed advisor is out of line telling people what they "should" and "shouldn't" do. And to put the # at 2 is ridiculous. Many people are currently holding an acceptance at their state school + 3 or 4 top 25 private schools. They are waiting on financial aid from the private schools. If they did as your advisor wants, they would have to drop one of the top 25 private school acceptances. This would lead to a very reduced chance of getting a nice financial aid package from a top 25(3 chances are better than 1).

OTOH, I know that some people do hold onto acceptances at places they *know* they aren't going to go to, regardless of what the financial aid comes out to be. This is tacky, but it's their right.

I'm holding onto 2 now, and I plan on holding these two(and maybe one more) right up until may 15.
