I have been averaging 13 per semester. Since I am doing post-bac work they are all science classes. This upcoming semester will be Orgo II, Physics I, Advanced Phys class and Analytical Chem. I just cant imagine taking another class. It will be only 14 credits.

How many credits do you average ? When you take four hard classes do you skip the fifth ?

16 credits. Next two semesters will be 16 hours worth of BCPM...I'll tell ya how it works out. This past semester I took 17 with only 3 non BCPM and kept my 4.0 so it is doable.

I am not the majority here.
I would say most average 15 with 9-12 BCPM and 1 normal if they are science majors.

Those four science classes should be fine - I don't think I'd want to tack on another one. Normally though, I take about 16-17 credits, with at least 3 non-science credits, this past semester was only four bio credits and 12 humanities credits, but I didn't really have a choice - I had to finish up my degree requirements.

I've taken 15 credits for most of my semesters.

This'll probably make me sound lazy, but I've averaged somewhere between 12 and 13 credits per semester. I came into undergrad with 22 hours, and so I found out, while also taking summer school, I could stretch out my classes pretty thin. True, I could've graduated a year ahead, but I did want to have some kind of a life =)

Take as many credits as you feel you can handle. You should have a good idea of your limits by now. As a dual-degree student, I average 18 credits each semester. That's where I'm comfortable. Some people like more, some people like less. It's all about finding that fine line that lies between a courseload that is stimulating and one that's overwhelming.

I tend to have about 20 credits. a semester. Last semester I only had 17 because they were hard classes, physics 2, organic one etc. Take whatever makes you most comfortable. Next semester I will have 20 credits, almost all of them advanced science classe,s but they are subjects i know I am good at. I take fewer credits when I know I will need more time to focus on one of my classes. There's nothing wrong with taking less classes and focusing on doing well in them. It shows that you know your strengths and weakness and how to pace yourself.

20 credits per semester since starting. Going into my 4th year and I've only taken about 3 or 4 non-bcpm classes. I would cut down if I could go back in time.

At my school, most kids take 4 classes, and the maximum is 5.5. One class is supposedly worth 4 semester hours, but there is some major variability due to the fact that labs are attached to lecture for no additional credit. Thus, Introductory Cultural Anthropology is worth the same as Organic Chemistry I + Lab-- that is, one course credit. Weird.

I usually take 4.5 credits, twice the .5 has been P/F and once it was for a grade. Once I took 5 credits. I'm taking only 4 for the first time next fall, but all of my classes are graduate-level courses in the natural sciences, one is research independent study, and one has an attached 4 hour lab. So it depends.

All in all, adcoms care MUCH more about your GPA. It's advisable if you can handle it to overload once with 2+ science classes just to show that you can manage, and take some grad-level classes if possible, but generally taking extra classes can't really set you apart.

The line to use for interviews is, "I found that as my undergraduate years went on, I was taking fewer and fewer classes, but getting more and more out of them." or "I would rather take X challenging classes and truly invest myself in them than get by with a surface understanding in a hectic courseload, when the temptation is to focus more on juggling responsibilities and making the grade than actually absorbing the material." Every faculty member I've spoken to about that eats it up. Seriously. It shows maturity and a lack of navelgazing resume-beefing.

21 each semester for first 3 semesters.
18 the fourth semester
15 the last two (yeah, I know... SLACKER TIME - but I had advanced lab and math research going on which sucked all time out of my life).
and 12 every summer.

I ain't gettin' any younger, ya know.

haha yup--

you'd be a great candidate for the "fewer classes as time goes on, but more rewarding" line.

freshman year...
fall - 14
spring - 15

i'm thinking about increasing it to 18 my sophomore year.

I've taken between 16-18 the last three years of undergrad. My advisor always says that med schools look down on super light semesters....but I personally don't know. I am taking 14 my spring semester senior year cause hopefully by then I'll be accepted [crossing fingers]...

Your advisor is just scaring you. There's no need to take 20 credits a semester unless you really have a bottleneck of classes or something.

How are you guys only taking 3-4 non-BCPM courses? Don't your schools have general education requirements? I needed 12 credits of social sciences, 12 credits of humanities, 3 credits of art, 3 credits of cultural diversity, and 9 credits of international courses (like language at or above the 3rd semester level).

You've really gotta do what you can handle, advisors can be at best crazy and at worst evil, I was doing only 12 (non science major specific) while working 1 full-time (40hrs) and a small part-time (8-10hrs) and I was nearly hospitalized. 🙂 I wish I had ignored the advisor that told me it would hurt my record to go part-time.

Yeah, I agree with that...the only time when it got to be too much was this past semester when I took the MCAT and I sorta wished I had taken a lighter load. The weird thing is I just worked my butt off and ended up having the best semester grades I've ever had. Hopefully MCAT scores will be alright too and I won't regret it.

18 for my first 2.5 years (5 semesters, not counting summer since that is different), 15 the next semester, took it easy with 12 hours (minimum to remain a full-time student) each semester of my senior year.

I am going to revive this thread again. I shall be transferring to a four year school next fall as a humanities major. At my community college the most I ever took was 8-9. since I am a non traditional student working full time. My plan was to take a minimum of 12 ( full-time student ) at a four year school. These are the options I have..

A) 12 credits per semester while raising a family, doing EMT, working in a hospital lab, tutoring part-time at a community college while volunteering, shadowing and competing in a sport. Humanities major while taking science prerequisites.

B) Same load as above but with 16 credits. If I take 16 credits it will allow me to minor in a subject of my choice, english with creative writing.

Wouldn't it be better to stick to option A? Option B is something I could handle but am worried of faltering while handling other things.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
i would stick with option A...it looks like you have enough going on without the addle hassle on trying to get a minor
