OK, so I'm drinking like a pot of coffee a day. I've tried to kick this, but get really 'stupid' without coffee. Can't think the same, certainly can't do well on tests, w/o it.

How 'bout you? What is your level of caffeine dependence?

Not to worry... coffee isn't as evil as everyone believes it is. Lots of anti-oxidants and whatnot. A study in Finnland even showed some evidence that it's protective against DM type 2. If that's true, my blood is the cure for diabetes!

Let the java flow!

i only drink cofffe at night, without a cup of coffee, i can not read anything on 10 min!🙁 ! i try to learn more at night with coffee's help, but it seems useless! at day, we come to class only to listen, listen and wacth! only night, i have time to review all what i have heard on day, with caffeine, but not much!😡 😡 and... drink too much coffee, ur skin will be come terrible!! iam scare!!!🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁

Wooohooo! Other 'pot' heads out there!

At least one espresso drink a day (homemade 🙂), with at least two shots of espresso. There's apparently some inverse relationship between coffee consumption and Parkinson's - so that's how I justify it.

I used to drink coffee all day. I would have a cup in the morning, kept a pot going in my lab, more in the late afternoon and my last cup after dinner with dessert.

When I went on vacation, I got a caffeine withdrawal headache on the first day because I slept in and didn't find any coffee until brunch. That headache caused me to decrease my caffeine intake to one cup of coffee with caffeine in the morning and decaf the rest of the day.

I love expresso drinks and will occasionally treat myself but once a week.

No more withdrawal headaches and I drink Dunkin Donuts decaf in the afternoon.

I'm not bothered if I don't get my coffee-but holy s**** batman, if I'm even an hour late taking my topomax, headache city.

I usually do one cup a day (or less). But down where I'm at school there's no Dunkin Donuts, so I've had exactly zero cups since early August. I miss my DD🙁

1 litre/day.

Fortunately, I only get the caffeine withdrawal headaches after a few days of no consumption, which makes cutting back a lot easier.

I was a real addict..i was consuming about a cup per hour,,,but for some reason I dont know..I quitted coffee and I started to work out..ofcourse I had a severe withdrawal syndrome..for about a week...now I am drinking coffee occasionally

Former big coffe drinker turned occasional here. When med school started, I was only sleeping like 5-6 hours per night because going to all my classes and then studying at night did not seem to leave enough time to sleep. I was drinking coffee non-stop then. After first block of exams, I decided to stop going to class. Made a world of difference. I get all my studying done in the day, do a light review at night (if even that). THen I play video games and sleep in until 9.
I am sure I will be back on the coffe for 3rd year though, because my homeschooling will no longer be possible.

I just love cofee, can't live without it! I drink 2 cups of normal coffee a day, after that I only drink decaf 🙂.

Woooohoo! I take Topamax for headaches too, but I have to say that missing coffee is much worse than missing Topamax. That stuff is a lifesaver, though!

One cup per regular day, two cups on mega-study days, expresso for exam days with an occasional coffee holiday.

I didn't start drinking coffee until last year, when I started to enjoy a cup at the coffee shop before heading to work. Once I broke the seal on that, I started to go off with co-workers on 'coffee break', so I was having two cups a day.

I loved it! When I had that cup I would feel euphoric, highly focused, and generally happy.

Since school started, I realized that I wasn't feeling the good feelings anymore, so I thought I would try quitting. Only two cups a day--shouldn't be a problem I thought.

After about a week I am just starting to return to 'normal'--the day after I quit I had a terrible headache and irritability, and was worthless when trying to study. Now I am just starting to be able to focus again, and most of the grumpiness is gone.

One positive thing: I've been sleeping fantastically since I quit. That's definitely worth something.

I love coffee...I just wish I didn't develop tolerance and dependence with it.

My hubby had a random stint at a starbucks when we were evacuated from Katrina, so he now makes me my doubleshot soy mochachino in the morning before school with a shnazzy espresso machine we bought (which has totally paid for itself considering how much real starbucks would cost). Then if I need a pick me up later in the day I'll drink a hot tea with caffeine in it, but I usually don't need this.

Um... why's the poll stop at one pot?

:wow: You have a personal barista?!!!!! I am drooling with envy, you so lucky😛

  I considered making "permanent caffeine IV" as an option

yeah, i think a lot better while under coffee.

whether coffee is good for you or not depend on whether you are a fast or slow metabolizer of caffeine. If you often drink coffee and the effects wear off within an hour, it is mostly likely you are a fast metabolizer and do not have to worry about side effects on the heart.

I miss DD so much I've had at least 10 dreams about it over the last 2 years.

Yes, someone feels my pain!

About 2 weeks ago Yahoo had a coupon for a free Medium DD for having them as my homepage (mmm ok? odd). So anyway here I was at school, studying for an exam, and having an emotional sort of day. I nearly burst into tears seeing it taunt me, then laughed at myself for being so psychotic. But really, no other coffee comes close.

I'm thinking of stopping by a Starbucks for their pumpkin spice latte whatever thing... I hate starbucks wiht a passion (being everything DD is Not) but I like pumpkin stuff, so I may break my boycott.

I've always thought they should make a caffeine patch like they have one for nicotine and birth control. I would def. invest in that.

ooh, and I used to drink caffeinated water (buzz water or water joe- you can buy it online!) and I have found caffeinated soap- which is supposed to absorb transdermally. never tried it tho- its been tempting.

not to derail the thread, but does anyone else think it's lame that starbucks doesn't offer free wi-fi? just about every other coffee shop i can think of does, including D n'd, which has much better coffee i might add.

boo starbucks, greedy yuppie pricks

Yeah, that sucks. 👎 They must get some money from T-mobile or something. I think I should get internet cuz I spend money at Starbucks AND I have a T-mobile phone. Come on, what else do you want? Oh, yeah, more money.

Although, our 24-hour starbucks is by a hotel that has wi-fi, and you can pick up the signal. Not always as reliable, but it's free.

Cup count for the day: +1 and counting...

Definitely. Here in Washington, the two big chain coffee places are Starbucks and Caribou, both of which charged for internet access until about a month ago when Caribou changed to a system where you get one hour of wi-fi free, and you get an access code for another hour for each drink you buy ($1.50 minimum purchase). Works for me...hopefully Starbucks will be forced to adapt something similar due to competition.

Hey, that would work for me. I usually end up buying more than one drink anyway. Although 2 hours would be better...

Got Caribou here too. Can't say I like it as much. I wonder if all the caribou's are doing that with the wi-fi. I could learn to like their drinks. 😉

I actually hated coffee before I got to med school. I mean, I was really disgusted by the taste of it. Then I went to Italy and had me some damn good cappucinos (cause you know, when in Rome...), and now I drink them here. But only occasionally. I have to buy SOMETHING from the coffee shop or else they'd kick me out for coming in ONLY to make a cozy little study nook out of one of their corner tables for hours on end on a regular basis. If I had to pick though, I'd take a chai tea latte or some other tea beverage over coffee...I only resort to cappucinos to mix up the routine every now and then.

So since we're on the subject and some of you guys already mentioned what drinks you like:

Share your favorite caffeine drink / chain / if you make your own fancy drink, share the recipee

I'm too cheap to buy coffee at coffee shops but always treat myself after an exam:

Caffee Mocha, no whip (b/c that limits caffeine containing matrix)

Panera & they have wireless internet. I usually buy a tea bag and milk that sucker till clear water.

DRINK: skinny white mocha easy on the whip, but usually just a dark roast for financial reasons, tea on occasion

PLACE: there is a GREAT independent shop ONE block from campus that has great coffee, food and FREE wireless; Panera is a good alternate location (also with FREE wirless)

Regular day: 1% latte, 1 raw sugar
Regular day but need a "pick me up": Latte with either 1 raw sugar or 2 pumps of vanilla syrup

:sniff: you just had to rub it in didn't you? That's one more "restaurant" (and I use the term restaurant loosely) that I can add to my chain of "I miss XXX" well, actually two, since I miss Krispy Kreme too (although I can't spell their name)

My favorite is a nonfat cinnamon dolce latte. But it's "seasonal" so the rest of the year it's a nonfat cinnamon latte plus caramel sauce.

I'm poor though so it usually ends up being coffee w/cream and an unnatural amount of sweet 'n low.

there was no option for 'more than a pot of coffee' 😱

I got into a nasty caffine cycle 1st year. I drank coffee to get a nice study buzz going but since I was studying all day I had so much caffine in my system that I wasn't able to sleep at night. Which led to me being even more tired the next day, which led to more coffee drinking, which led to even less sleep that night, etc etc.
Second year I went cold turkey and was much healthier. Right now I'm trying with all my might to not become dependent on the stuff during rotations.

Honestly, even though I'm a light caffeine consumer (no soda, etc, other hidden caffeine) I don't notice a real caffeine effect. Granted on a couple occasions I've had a 20 oz with no food or 1 quaker chewy bar all day, and my hands got the shakes pretty bad.

But as far as keeping me awake/alert, it doesn't seem to do much. Course when I'm tired, nothing short of a Richter (sp?) 9 earthquake will keep me from sleeping, but even when I want to avoid the dreaded 2-4pm afternoon "lull", coffee can't stave it off... I wish it would!

Wow, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who misses Dunkin Donuts so much. Last Sunday I drove 10 miles out of my way to the only DD in this area to fulfill my craving. I started to think I was crazy until I came across this thread. 😀

The secret to good regular coffee is to:

1) Drink it from a beer stein. Lid optional; I don't go for the lid, as it impedes getting to my coffee.

2) Do not wash the beer stein.

ps- You can rinse it out, but the layer of brown stuff that builds up is important to good taste.

  I was so embarrassed to tell my friends that the reason I was late was because I HAD to have my weekly treat 😀

There should be Coffee Anonymous

ok so it's not really coffee (i can't get a taste for that stuff) but i drink enough diet coke to kill a horse. seriously, if i add it up it is over 100 ounces a day! omg!! i don't even want to know that that is doing to my body!!

i am junkie...what to do!!

D.--

OMG that is a brilliant idea...that would save me so much time from not having to run to the bathroom every hour!!!

we NEED to get someone working on that!!

Heh, I don't ever drink coffee (love the smell, HATE the taste), but I am a tea junkie. I also drink a lot of diet Coke when it's too hot for tea. Mostly though, it's all about the outlandishly large teapot I procured from Ikea, and the delicious assortment of teas in my cupboard.

Mmm. Tea.
