how many DO and MD schools did you apply to?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
And still growing daily folks 😉

LOL and whose fault was that!? Hahaha jk. @Awesome Sauceome

I do realize that applying to 20 D.O. schools will, most likely, be a total waste of money. However, I feel that in the grand scheme of things a couple extra hundred dollars isn't going to break me. I want to make sure that I get into a school this year, and the extra interviews can be good practice that I can use on the schools I really would like to attend. As soon as I get an acceptance, I can start canceling interviews/secondaries that I don't want in order to save money. I am also holding out on sending in a few secondaries from "lower tier" D.O. schools right now.

Lets keep this thread alive.

Who wants to volunteer first?

Honestly, other than the very top MD schools and the very top DO schools, this process seems more like a lottery than anything else. The more tickets you buy, the more chance you have of winning. Seems to me that applying to more schools and getting into one is waaaay cheaper than not applying to enough and having to spend another year improving your application. That being said, I did follow the advice not to apply to any schools in a place I really was unwilling to live...applied to 10 DO and 20 MD.

I guess I will give an update

3.6 c/sgpa, 28 (9,9,10) MCAT. Wisconsin resident.

I applied to 10 DO schools - midwest schools and east coast only.
Sent in my application within the first week of June.
I received secondaries from all 10.
Received 3 interview invites so far, all from midwest schools.
Regional bias is a real thing here folks, keep that in mind when you are applying. Play to your strengths.

I guess I never realized you applied back in June. Are you worried that you've only received 3 ii so far? I applied +/- Aug 8th and have only received one ii and one rejection. I'm starting to get a little nervous, even though I tell myself I need to keep waiting. Stats are similar to yours; 3.5 sgpa/3.3 cgpa/3.9 post bacc/30 mcat

Yea my problem was that while I applied early in June and sent my secondaries back at the end of June and early July (except for I think UNECOM and Rowan whom sent their invitations out late), I was not complete at a lot of schools until late July/early August. This is because my committee letter was not done until then. So while still being pretty early, I missed out on being in the first round of interview invites at a lot of schools. Even DMU I am in the second round, and probably only received the interview invite because I am in a midwest state.

As for your question... I am definitely not worried at 3 invites so far. I know the cycle is still extremely early. This early on schools only bring in super star applicants (numbers wise), people with regional biases or state ties, or people who just have an overall killer application and catered it to the school's mission successfully. Come September and October a lot more people will start seeing interviews. I am predicting even for myself (just based on seeing other people on here from previous years with similar stats) that I will get roughly 5 interviews by November. Realistically even at 3, it would be hard to mess up at this point, I mean I would have to royally screw up at all 3 interviews to not have the chance to become a doctor. I mean it could happen, but realistically a lot of stress has dropped simply by being blessed enough to have 3 interviews. I am extremely thankful for the 3 that I have so far, and 2 of the schools are in my top 5 choices and the 3rd is still an awesome school and could be a top 5 after visiting. So I am definitely pumped about every single opportunity. I have 2 interviews coming up in the next 2 weeks. If I am lucky enough to receive an acceptance, I am seriously considering taking the acceptance and just calling the cycle done - just because they are such good schools and I can see myself at these schools.

But all the same, I would be lying if I said I wasnt nervous about the cycle. But not because of the reasons I originally expected when I first applied. I originally thought I would be nervous because I would only hear from a couple of schools and it would really be a coin toss on whether or not I would have the opportunity to become a physician. Heck I was only expecting 6 secondaries originally when I was making my list! So you can imagine my shock when I was 10/10 and have not received any post secondary rejections. So I guess I am just learning how much of a crap shoot this whole thing is. I made my list of 10 schools based upon a carefully selected list of "top tier," "mid tier," and "low tier" DO schools. I applied to 3 of the original 5 DO schools (considered top tier). I have so far heard back from 2 of the 3 (the 3rd isnt offering interviews yet). Yet of my 3 "low tier" schools, I have not heard from a single one yet. So again you can imagine my shock at having the opportunity to interview at top tier schools. As a comparison it would be like an MD applicant who applied to their state school and then Harvard just for kicks - only to be invited to Harvard and not hear anything from their state school. So mostly the nervous is from the "randomness" (or perceived randomness) within the application process. I have decided to scrap any ideas of having any serious choice in where I end up (until post interview), and instead embrace the process and be thankful for whatever schools invite me in, wherever they are at. So I am not so much worried as I am just concerned that I wouldnt even have a chance to even look at other schools simply because of my state of residence. But again, all worries I could have are seriously overshadowed by complete thankfulness that I even received a single interview invite.

But now that the cycle is revving up, I am concerned about the fact that your address affects so much on your application. Like even at 2/3 of the schools I have interviews at, I know that my secondaries were not as strong as some of the east coast schools (just because I wrote them after starting to get serious essay burnout). Yet here I am with 3/3 of the midwest schools, very likely because I am a midwest resident. So I guess I am just learning how much of a crap shoot this whole thing is. Ah okay, so we were complete roughly around the same time (me probably about 2ish weeks later). My first (and rather quick) ii was from Western..which is the school closest to me. Did get secondary from Touro NY the other day, so hopefully that leads to an ii there as well. I'm quite content staying in California, so hopefully Western works out and I can stop worrying. In any event, best of luck to you Mr. Sauceome, look forward to hearing where else you get ii's from.

Exactly... the local schools definitely bring you in more. But I have traveled around a bit so the problem is I can see myself living in a lot of different places! I would love to be able to see all of the schools and then make a choice, but its all good. I understand that schools like locals, and thats cool, I can respect that.

The bigger stress now is just making sure the car does not break while driving to interviews, and that planes leave on time haha. THESE are the real concerns I have heh... I am trying to take as little time off of work as I can, so it is going to be down to the wire for all 3 interviews.

10 DO (Just added 3 yesterday)

3.49/3.35/26

6 secondaries so far. Recently submitted secondaries no ii's yet.

20 DO, 8 MD
cGPA 3.3, sGPA 3.15, 3.8 post-bacc, 29 MCAT (MD GPAs a little lower).

I applied very broadly because I wanted to go somewhere, and I thought my GPAs would hold me back. I thought that I would be lucky to receive 1-2 IIs. I have been fortunate to receive 8 so far (4 close to home and 4 much farther away; includes 1 MD). The closer ones came after the farther ones; had it been the other way around, I don't know that I would have scheduled all the ones farther away. I believe my ECs and secondaries (both the content and timing) really helped me. I got the majority of my secondaries in within 3 or 4 days of receiving them.

[ QUOTE="Mad Jack, post: 15646573, member: 562008"]20 DO schools if I remember correctly. Should've applied to like, ten max with my stats. Wasted a LOT of money.

Same here lol[/QUOTE]

Just out of curiosity. what were your stats? if you don't mind sharing

3 DO, 3 MD. I have financial limitations so I applied regionally and within my scores. I'm a bit nervous when I hear some people who've applied to 20+, but I'll remain optimistic.

You are good so long as your scores are competitive. Realistically where you have the greatest shot at attending are those schools who are close to you regionally.

I applied to 9 MD and 8 DO. So far I've received 10 interviews (7 DO, 3 MD), and while I'm very grateful for the interviews, I'm already feeling like I applied to too many :/. I mostly added more MD schools because my state doesn't have an MD school, so i don't get in-state preference anywhere 🙁

Dude congrats! Not that your stats are necessarily bad, especially for DO, but still 3 MD with a 3.6 and 29 MCAT. Prove SDN wrong man!

I applied to 11 D.O schools and 4 MD schools. My stats are 26/28 MCAT and 3.48GPAa.
I submitted 3 MD secondaries so far.
I am still waiting for my AACOMAS application to finish processing!! I submitted and was complete on July 20th. IDK its taking so long!! I feel like I am not even later in the application cycle than I already was. Nerve wracking right now. Anyone else still waiting?

y did u choose not to apply MD?

My own personal philosophies fit in well with osteopathic principles, I'm very interested in primary care and OMM, and the physician who has been the strongest influence on me is a DO.

A year ago I would have applied to MD as well, but the more I've learned about osteopathic medicine, the more I've realized this is the path I want to take.

Aw thanks a lot!! And I actually just got an interview from UVM this morning, which is my dream school!I'm a re applicant, so this is really such an amazing feeling. I guess it's just really nice to know that schools are looking for more than just perfect stats. Here's to us underdogs 😉
