How many hours do you study?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm currently only taking one class, as I graduated in May, but the last two years I'd study a pretty consistent five hours a day. I can't break it up per class, as it depended on what was coming up, what was due, etc.

Per day or what?

I have histology Monday and Wednesday, I spend about 45 minutes before each meeting, so 1.5 hours per week.
Virology Tuesday and Thursday takes about 1 hour before each class, so another 2 hours per week.
Advanced immunology requires about 1.5 hours of reading before the 1 class session on Friday.

5 hours per week for normal studying, then about 4-5 hours extra total per course per exam over the week leading up to an exam. By time the exam comes around, I'm just refreshing my knowledge of everything I read and then learned in class.

I suck at estimating but it's probably somewhere around 5-8 hours for Orgo, 2 hours for Calc, 30-45 min. for German and nothing for Rhetoric unless we have an essay due. I'm taking 16 credits total.

I'm also working with a non-profit organization as part of this writing/leadership program so that's probably an extra 3-5 hours per week. Oh, and I work about 10-15 hours a week in a Biochem lab. I've seriously got to find some time for volunteering...

All the time, except some of the time when I don't.

I...study maybe 30 minutes a normal (non-midterm) week at most...and spend maybe 2-3 hours per week on homework...yeah...

It sounds so little.

As an M1, about 4-5 hours/day on the weekdays and 6-7 hours/day on weekends. These hours increase closer to exam time.

This semester I was taking 15 hours now I have 11 (I dropped one of my 3 lab sciences cuz the professor)...

I would say for Organic 2- about an hour or so a day (and then like 3-4 a day the 5 days before an exam

Physics- I honestly haven't studied yet- should be increasing that to about an hour a day now

Communications 15 mins a day- just doing routine hw

Before I dropped Microbiology- 2 hours a day (hence why I dropped it- that and the prof kept us in lab an hour extra and it messed up my schedule)

I work about 10-15 hours a week and volunteer 5 hours a week as well

Outside of class...

In college: 3-4 hours a week
In medical school: 5-6 hours a day

I'm doing correspondence, so no class time. I spend between 5 and 8 hours a day studying, and I don't really take any full days off (unless an emergency comes up).

I should probably go easier on the science courses next semester... way too much reading. Orgo, Physics w/calc, cell bio, animal physio, and human genetics... I have too much work for an undergrad :scared::scared::scared:

I dunno... I spent a lot of time reviewing my notes because I get into discussions that involve things that I learned. Some nights I study for about 2 hours before I go to bed, and other nights I don't study at all. I spend a fair amount of time on Saturday studying when I don't go home, because it's one of my few 'free' days. Just depends, I suppose.

I'm taking Genetics, Human physiology, Physics w/lab, and 2 other humanities classes...17 hrs total...doable?

I kind of hate genetics though, I just hate doing those crosses....

I usually study at least 2-3 hrs everyday.

I'm taking 21 hours of biology, chemistry, calc II, history, and a biological sciences survey.

in reality, i spend 23 hours a week in class + the bio sci survey is all online. i'd say during a normal week i spend about 30 hours studying and if i have a quiz it is about 40 and for a test more like 50.

a normal week i read for each class and take a few notes of my own. i make online flashcards for my classes as well. after class i go over my notes and make any additional afterthoughts and then answer questions in the back of the chapter.

for tests/quizzes i just study until i know everything!!

for my labs, i obviously have to prepare for the labs and write lab reports each week (for my bio lab and chem lab)

for a full load, i studied about 5 hrs/day normally.

if i had a test, i'd study for about 8 hrs/day for the whole week before (this goes for the harder science classes... for the easy ones, i'd just study ~10 hrs the day or 2 before)

Include how much you study hours, minutues
How many hours you are taking currently
and I guess you could also put how many hours you spend in each class.

I'm taking 15hrs this semester. Organic II and Physics II are the only ones that I have to study. I usually study Organic for an hour everyday, and then study for 6-7 hours a day leading up to an exam. For physics, I just do the homework assigned, which takes about 2 hours per week. For exams, I study 3-5 hours the night before. I'm getting A's so far!

As for the other 7 hours in my schedule...ehh...who cares?

Hahaha, I feel like an absolute ****. I probably average about 4-5 hours a day, and I have to keep reminding myself to put in more hours on Friday and Saturday as well.

about 3 or 4 hours a day most days of the week. Definitely a lot more if I have exams. Taking 21 hours on average, with a bit more this quarter than normal

Actual studying time, 3-5 hours a week, if i have homework, papers, or labs, then its more depending on the situation

about 10 hours a week studying and doing homework, but during test time it is more like 10 hours a day.

taking 20 credits
~24 hours in class

Study/pre-read/review/do homework/work problem sets until I'm comfortable for about 5 hrs/day Monday-Thurs, 4 hrs on Fridays, and about 8 hrs/day on Sat & Sun. Sometimes I only spend a couple of hours studying on Saturday, but wind up paying for it on Sunday. I might spend a little more time preparing for major tests and exams, but not much because I review as I go. So, I feel comfortable that I've actually learned the material.

How many hours I study a week?

Sitting in front of my books: 2-3 hours a day outside of class.

Actual studying done: about 45 minutes worth.

When work piles up I go through short bursts of efficiency where I work 3-4 hours straight and am actually productive during the whole time.

I study for about 2hrs each day. But at the beginning of this quarter, I would be studying for at least 3 hours a day because my mol gen. class

second semester M1 was easily around six hours a day once the semester got up to speed, some days less, some days more. It had its down time as well. Near an exam block, it would ratchet up to 10-12 hours a day. I'm not a robot, so that includes meals and a few games of pool, but I study away from the Internetz.

i dont really study on weekdays unless a midterm is close which is when i study about 3-4 hours a day couple of days before the midterm. but i try to review a few hours every weekend so im not totally starting from scratch

PS: i dont miss class

i dont study that often...just about a week prior to the test i study the material like crazy for long hours and cram everything into my temporal lobe and murder exams like its my job🙂

wow, i see the 3-4 hours/week responses and i feel like i MUST be doing something wrong... i spend a minimum of 15 hours/week on weekly beng homeworks alone. on top of that, i spend another 5+ hours/week studying for that beng class (all day if it's a day or two before an exam). then my other classes combined get maybe 15-20 hours/week depending on whether or not they are lab classes or how often we have exams.

maybe i get distracted too easily /:

Ha, study? In undergrad? I was supposed to do that? Seriously, most weeks I did not study at all. If I had a test, it would be ~3-4 hours 1-2 days before the test. Ha, that would explain my alright but not great GPA.

Medical school: 3-4 hours on a normal weekday with about 4 on Saturday and Sunday. It goes up by an hour or two each day the week of an exam.

Do you like NYMC? What were your stats and when did you find out if you were interviewed or not? I am looking at NYMC and would really appreciate your input! Thanks!

I am taking 12 hours

Chem-3 hours on weekdays will increase as it becomes more difficult.
Trig-2 hours on weekdays, It feels like more since it is so much practice.
Anthro-none
Advance Rhetoric- 2 hours a week
SDN- 15 minutes a day....3 hours 15 minutes a week..

On the weekend I stude maybe 4 hours between them both.
I work to stay ahead, so I have a free weekend....but lo and behold my discovery of SDN has put an end to that.

Um... are you saying that you study for a quiz for 10 hours? Based on your description of your study habits, you should barely have to study for quizzes at all.

i usually study around 4 or 5 hours a week, more if there is an exam coming up...i never miss class, though, and have a pretty good memory

Depends on the content of your classes too. I don't have any homework in my classes this semester, except for preparation for presentations and papers. I have reading too, but I can usually knock most of that out in a couple hours a week.

Jew Alcindor is one of the funniest names i have ever heard. props.

I'm taking 22 credit hours this semester...so I spend around 25 hours in class a week when you take labs into account. I spend about 2-3/hrs a night doing hw, studying, or reading. If a big lab is due or I have a test, that number will go up. I don't do homework or studying on Friday or Saturdays though... its college, and you gotta live it up.

Undergrad: 7 hours per week, maybe.

Med school: 20 hours per week, easily.

17 credit hours.
During regular weeks: 3 hours/day on weedays, and 4-5 hours/day on weekends.
During/nearing exam weeks: 6-7 hours per day.

Again, it depends on the content of your classes.

15 Credits.

3-4 hours a day depending. Every week (usually thurs or friday) I do a marathon 7-8 hour study session.

Weekends I only study on Saturday, no studying on Sunday. When the next week hits I'm refreshed and ready.

When a test approaches I simply get a study group going, that way I can teach the material to them that I have studied and it cements in my brain.

Note: If you don't workout you will lose your mind from all the studying.

Looking back on undergrad.. I used to spend essentially up until 10 or 11pm studying (1st and 2nd yr) - with the occasional all nighter. One day off a week. 10pm on going out nights (Thurs-Sat)
My little sister's in undergrad now and I'm always giving her (probably annoying) premed advice. What helped the most was to stop studying at 1030pm and go out for 2-3 hours. Don't drink too much and you'll be able to study just fine in the morning and be much happier since you have a social life. It gets infinitely easier after sophomore year. By 3rd yr you'll know how to study for your exams and know what to expect from your profs so you will need to study only a fraction of the original amount.

I suppose you studied when you got out of class.. that is what I do. I get out at 2:00 eat and study 4:00 p.m -8:00 p.m

But I study in between classes as well, I have a 2 hour break.

What do you guy constitute as studying

doing homework
practicing problems
doing require reading
doing required papers

I think studying is

doing practice problems (technical courses math, science courses)
rereading require reading
office hours for help.
