How many hours per week do you work as a med student?

Please divide the hours into two categories:

1. Scheduled, on-location work. This must be done at a specific time and usually in a specific place, like the lecture hall or the hospital.

2. Anytime, anywhere work. Most studying falls into this category, it can be done in the library, at home, at 3 AM, whatever.

If you are comfortable saying the med school you attend, that would be super helpful.

Fake Example Data:

"I am John Doe, I am a third year medical student at Alaska State University. Here is how much I work:

MS1:
25 hrs/week scheduled on-location.
25 hrs/week anytime anywhere.
50 hrs/week total.

MS2:
25 hrs/week scheduled on-location.
30 hrs/week anytime anywhere.
55 hrs/week total.

MS3:
50 hrs/week scheduled on-location.
10 hrs/week anytime anywhere.
60 hrs/week total.

[End fake data.]

If you want to talk about your schedule, that might also be interesting. Thanks.

MS1- 14-18 hours on-site (lectures, labs, talks, etc)
35-65 hours a week off-site, depending on how close to block week it is. Probably average about 50 hours/week for off-site studying.

There's a difference between ACTUAL studying completed vs. the amount of time committed.

Time sitting and "studying" = 12 hours/day = 84 hrs/week. + ~15 hours of mandatory class = ~100 hours/week.
ACTUAL WORK = 8 hrs/day = 56 hrs/week + ~15 hrs class = 70 hrs/week.

If you're just aiming for the P=MD... 45 hrs/week of actual work should be plenty of time to pass all your tests etc.

@fastlane What do you do in your four hours of "time studying" - "actual work"?

Keep in mind that hrs/week varies a great deal from block to block (preclinicals) and from rotation to rotation (clinicals) even at the same school.

Easiest M1 block -

10 hrs/wk scheduled on location (2 hrs M-F average)
42 hrs/wk anytime anywhere (6hrs day average)
52 hrs/wk total

Hardest M2 block -

15 hrs/wk scheduled on location (3 hrs M-F average)
70 hrs/wk anytime anywhere (10 hrs day average)
85 hrs/wk total

Easiest rotation (FM)

40 hrs/wk scheduled on location (8 hrs M-F average)
14 hrs/wk anytime anywhere (2 hrs day average)(shelf studying and homework assignments)
54 hrs/wk total

Hardest rotation (Surgery)

76 hrs/wk scheduled on location (12 hrs M-F average plus half day Saturday and one night on call)
14 hrs/wk anytime anywhere (2 hrs day average)(shelf studying and homework assignments)
90 hrs/wk total
