First of all I know that each person has his or her own habits of studying and different schools requires different amounts of studying, but on average how many hours do you study a day? In med school, does the average student get to party at least each weekend?

During 1st and 2nd year, I'd say I averaged 1 hour per day studying (outside of class, if I even went to class). So maybe 7 hours/week.
That's an average because the week prior to exams I would cram like crazy (4-5 hrs/day) while 2 weeks after exams I wouldn't touch a book.
It worked for me. I'm sure it's not the norm though. I also studied for Step 1 for 2 weeks at about 5 hours a day which APPARENTLY is NOT the norm.
I'm definitely no genius but I do have good short term recall which is what the 1st two years of med school are all about. However, the last two years are not conducive to my cramming style.

If you are concerned about going out, don't be. I have three weeks of exams starting next week but I still had time to go out and watch the first half of the Mavs game and have a few beers with my classmates. There is always time to play...
That being said, I would have to say I study (as a first year) around 10 hrs/week. Some weeks less, some weeks more, but that is about the average.

My schedule was almost exactly like Peustow's. Lots of time on the weekends to go out and have fun. It does also depend on the school. Our school had exams once a month and this was much better for my style than the weekly exams at some schools.
Thank you for replying, I just wanted to make sure that all my life would not be studying.

Opel, it's all about priorities. Your sanity, not your studies, should be your top priority. Having fun w/ friends, keeping in touch with family, etc. are super important. Make sure you do fun stuff away from school every once in a while. It's amazing... I didn't figure this out until my second year. When I finally just relaxed and started to enjoy my life outside of school, it's amazing how much better my grades got. I think there's a lesson in that somewhere...
