I was recently offered a volunteer position at large hospital pharmacy department. I have zero pharmacy experience so far. I was curious as to how many hours should I clock prior to applying?

I'm really excited!

Thank you

I only had 16 total hours actually in a pharmacy and I got in everywhere I applied. Granted the rest of my stats were pretty good. Most of my interviewers brought up my experiences in pharmacy and were more worried that I had a variety of experiences than the number of hours I had done. This variety showed that I had experienced the different areas of pharmacy (those 16 hours were split between three different types of pharmacies).

So my advice would be to get a good amount of hours with this opportunity without getting overwhelmed. Along with that though try to find some other shadowing experiences in other areas of pharmacy to show that you understand the field you are getting into.

Pump out as many hours as you can WHILE maintaining a solid GPA

The school I applied to recommend a minimum of 40 hours. I had 67 hours when I applied. Go for 100+ hours and you will be awesome. 😀

I'd say at least 40 hours. Volunteering and clubs are self reported so no one will ever verify them.

Yes.. but it is possible for them to call to verify your hours. Our hospital keeps track of volunteer work. It is unlikely for them to do so but still... I wouldn't falsify them.

I'm thinking experiences are more important than straight # of hours. It'd be strange if you clocked in 100+ hours but have nothing interesting to say at your interview.
