How many II should you have by the end of August to be in good shape?

I only have 1 II so far and I was complete at most of my schools around 7/22. Since I'm assuming most of my schools will get back to me sometime at the end of this month, how many II do y'all think is a safe number to have to have a good shot at an acceptance? Please don't say something stupid like "20" or "get an II from all schools." I'm looking for some constructive advice. Thank you!

You assume wrong.

General rule of thumb is a 3:1 ratio for interviews to acceptances. The earlier the better. This "by the end of August" chances thing you're looking for is arbitrary and doesn't exist.

It depends on which schools you've applied to. I notice that MD schools as a whole are a lot slower to review applications because they get more applicants. I've received 1 MD interview and 0 rejections, but 6 DO interviews and 0 rejections.

Your "only 1 II" is many more than many other applicants have at this stage in the game. Most schools, like Doctor Strange said, will not get back to you by the end of this month. I'd believe that you'll have a decision from every school you applied to by summer of next year. Some will take FOREVER to get back to you in my experience. Interview seasons span until April of next year on average, I believe, so you're still doing well. Long story short, I don't think there's some magic number you should have by the end of August.

The only way anyone can give you an (inconclusive and weak) answer to that would be to use previous years' data, and that data may not even apply this year, given how slowly things are moving.

One interview for every three acceptances? That seems right considering the national average of about 40% acceptance at each individual school, but somehow still low considering the variation between state school acceptance rates, etc. How many interviews does the average applicant receive?

I'm just worried that I'm getting passed over at most of my schools. Guess I should calm down though; been reading too much SDN

Complete all the one's that have short secondaries with no essays 🙂 Like Mayo and Einstein.

I have 2 MD and 1 DO (all texas)

But I am a Texas resident. So I am sure that factors in.

I have also been rejected by 1 MD (Mayo).

I have 4 interviews right now, but I think it all depends on how quickly the schools review applications, if they do "tiered" interview invites, etc. If you have one II now, there's still plenty of the time left in the cycle for you to rack up some more interviews/acceptances. It's still early.

going to bump this thread. I received 3 within the span of 1.5 weeks (about a 2 weeks after I was verified). Wondering if this is a good thing or a bad thing considering I applied to ~22 schools and other people have IIs at some schools that I haven't heard from. 🙁

When is having 3 II's a bad thing? Stop worrying about other people.

You're terrible at math, aren't you? You can't even analyze a ratio.

I only have one interview. But then again, I've only submitted secondaries within the past two weeks. These threads make me start to panic. Stop making these threads.

I think it largely depends on the types of schools you applied to. If you only applied to top 20 med schools, you will likely have fewer interview offers than someone with an identical app who applied very broadly. Don't worry about how many interview offers you have relative to other people, that just adds unnecessary stress to an inherently stressful process.

Any interview invites by the end of August is a really good thing. These are very early invites.

From what I gather most invites are sent Sept-Dec. Shoot for having 3+ invites by the end of the year and doing well at the interviews and you should be in good shape.

+1. People are going to have to learn to stop constantly comparing themselves to others. It's hard to do, but empowering once you can do it.

And in answer to the OP's question, the number of invites is irrelevant. I had six invites by August and had to wait until December for my first DO acceptance, and May for my first MD.
