I have ten scheduled interviews of which I have completed seven. The remaining three are in January and I am strongly considering cancelling one. Nothing I've heard about the program has wowed me--I highly doubt it would replace any of my top four or five choices on the rank list--and I'm getting a little nervous about time away during the rotation.
So, basically, are nine interviews at top- and mid-tier programs enough?

(Before you ask, I'm a US MD student, board scores 23x/24x, top half of class.)

Yes. Is one your home school? Are they likely to rank you to match? Then double yes.

Didn't apply at my home school (geographical reasons, trying to get closer to family). I know in general for a solid applicant eight or nine should be enough, but I wasn't sure if that held true when three of the programs in question are very competitive and the others aren't far behind.

Like TP says, the magic number is a combination of your competitiveness as an applicant and the competitiveness of the programs. If by "mid-tier" programs, you are literally talking about programs that would fall near the midline of all of the psych programs, 9 is likely plenty if you are an allopathic graduate with a national average step 1 and a high-pass to honor in psych. Assuming you interview without coming across as someone to avoid.

If you want something more quantitative, check out NMRP's charting outcomes.

Unless you are a complete jerk, it would be hard to interview at 9 places and not match. The question is, are those nine acceptable enough to make you happy? If yes, cancel asap. The coordinator is probably already lining up faculty and residents to interview you.
