I know this is going to obviously vary from school to school, but say a school gets 1000 applicants and takes a class size of 100. obviously, they have to accept more than 100 students because not everyone they accept is going to have them ranked as their top choice school.

so about how many students do you think, on average, turn an acceptance down? for every 100 do you think there are 100 who end up going elsewhere? is it much lower than this like maybe 10 or 15? or is it even higher, like 200?

like i said i know it's got vary big time.... but with about 10,000 applicants and 4,500 seats... that would indicate about a 45% acceptance rate... but if you look at each of the individual schools it is often in the 5-15% range!

If your post is 100%, I can little bit relax..(45% is great..^^)
thank you for info

you should post this in the DAT section under QR!

It really depends on the school, but my hunch is that the number of offers extended by schools is around 2x to 3x the class size.

at Case they have the following stats:

Fall 2005 Entering Class:
Positions Available 70
Applicants 2279
Number interviewed 357

I know they have a pretty extensive alternate list, so it seems like for case a larger percentage of "regular" interviews have a better shot of gaining admissions. i'm not really sure though.

UConn has ~45-50 seats availiable and they give 100 acceptance letters. I'm sure most schools are around that ratio.

OK, although I understand why they send out more acceptance letters then seats, what if more people accept then they can accomodate? Do they then retract some of the acceptance letters? I am wondering about the logistics of this.

I mean, it's not like the airlines where they can bump you on the next flight and give you first class!

I would be crushed if I got accepted, told my family and friends and then got a call saying, "Oops! My bad. You can't come to our school!". LOL

PDizzle... they probably initially accept their class size or just a little more... and then as people decline and decide to attend elsewhere, they offer more and more acceptances.

No, that is not a correct figure. Dr. Thibodeau said that they interview 180, give 90 offers, and matriculate 40.

Last Year USC received 2500 applications for 144 spots and 3 were sent back home because either did not completed their bachelor's and GPA problems; hence, we ended up with a total of 141 students.

When I asked the Associate Dean at the Stonybrook about the acceptance letter they are going to send out, she said that they are only sending the exact number (their class size) of acceptance letters (meaning they expect most of the students who actually get the accpetance will come to their school). Maybe this only applies to Stony since they have such a small class size (~37). By the way, did everyone who had an interview at Stony recieve a letter after your interview? (I got mine yesterday - It is a "Thank You" letter, which I freaked out at first cause I thought it was a rejection notice)
