I think I'm gonna be taking a year off after i graduate college, because i'll be applying the june of my senior year. How many people actually do this? are there more people going to d-school right after college, or are there more people that do what i'm gonna do? or is it a 50/50 situation?

I'm in the same boat, I just graduated in May. And am just now applying for dent. school. It all depends on if you feel you're ready to jump right into it. 😱
I dunno statistics or anything, but I'm sure its not a rare occurance

Taking a wild guess, I would say 1/4 of our students took a year or more off. Working in different fields, doing research, etc.

..so i ended up traveling for 6 months or so..
i was then in research for about a year before deciding i wasnt really interested in mol bio anymore and decided to commit to this fixin' teeth thing..

I'm doing that right now. For me, I knew that I needed a little break before jumping back into four more years of schooling. The way I looked at it I could have the degree in a year less, though minus the experience of lounging by the pool, going to the beach on the weekends, and 'sampling' as many margaritas as possible. 👍 My advice: take the year off, travel, go backpacking through Europe, see a couple of tropical islands, discover the 'you' outside of the confines of school and a curriculum. So what if you are get your degree one year later - chances are you'll never be this free of obligations in your life - so take advantage of it. 🙂

Graduated Dec 2003. Just worked from then until June when I started the Kaplan DAT class. Just finished that, and going back to school for a year to boost GPA and taking DAT. Applying as early as possible in 2005 and hopefully start in 2006! I kinda wished now that I had gone back to school immediatly after graduating, but I guess it was nice to take a break from academia.

GO TAKE A YR OFF!! I didn't and i am sooooooooo in need of time off... (that's why i haven't taken my boards or even really started studying for it...) but the only disadvantage is that you graduate a yr later and that i couldn't afford 🙁

I graduated in May '03 and will be starting in couple of weeks. I think a year off is an excellent idea. I've worked in a lab, and have had a crappy job as a meat helper in a grocery store. Work some job for a while (even a relatively cool lab job), and you will appreciate the future you will have given yourself. You will work for a company, work for years with limited income growth potential, and realize that with dentistry you will still control your own future-not have your future controlled by some supervisor you know you are smarter and more talented than. Just my thoughts.

After talking to my fellow classmates I would say that around 60% of the 2008 class at Boston University DID NOT start dental school right after undergrad graduation, as a matter of fact some took 2,3 years off before they started! You are definately NOT a minority!

just out of curiosity, do the majority of people apply after completing 3 years of undergrad? -- and if so, what are the chances of getting in? as opposed to completing 4 years, getting your degree and then applying?
