How many premeds do you think fail forever to get into a med school?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think as long as you're not dumb and know what the adcoms want to see on an application, you can get into med school. The problem is that most pre-meds don't know what the adcoms want. They don't know how to play the game of med school admissions...and so they don't get accepted. Many think that "If I major in Biology, get a good GPA and killer MCAT score, do some volunteering and shadowing, and become an officer of this pre-med club, I'll get in."

so what exactly are they looking for? i thought those were crucial elements into getting admitted

I know where you're coming from, my initial reaction to that list was the same, and while it's pretty detailed and correct, he's not being directly sarcastic. He's saying that average premeds treat it like a checklist, and I think he's implying that they underestimate how difficult it is to do some of those things... Part of it also is that they're setting themselves up to be exactly like every other numbers-competitive applicant.

I have not even technically been following the premed route. I just picked Biochem as my major, and half into it realized I just "finished" premed. Hopefully I did not miss much by not "following" premed earlier on.

You can still apply to Med without premed, right? 👎

Most premeds don't even apply, let alone get accepted into a med school.

This is my first application cycle, and I don't have any acceptances yet, but at least I've made it further than most people, and that is sort of reassuring.

I did that and I got in.

It would be reasonable to assume that students who take MCAT have aspiration to become physicians. With that assumption probably 25% them make it, and about 75% don't make it.

Agree ... I wonder how many of the 93% later become advisers(advisors?) ?

That is exactly what mine did. She ended up getting a PhD in biochemistry. She is very bitter to say the least.😀

Someone posted earlier that only 20% of MCAT test-takers in a given year are accepted. 93% of all individuals who "claim" they are pre-med sounds about right.
