How many programs have you applied to??

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I applied to 8...originally it was only 5 but I had a similar feeling as you and threw in 3 more just for kicks. It's not too late to apply to a few more, they just might not fully fit the criteria you originally set.

I applied to 12 because i wasn't sure at all where i wanted to go... i would NOT recommend applying to that many it was very expensive and now i have 10+ interview invites all over the country that i have to pay for to attend. I have already been accepted to most of the schools i applied and it just makes the decision much harder with so many options.

In the end if you apply to 10 or more programs you will spend way more money and time on applying process than necessary!

Just pick a few schools you can for sure get in to and a few you hope to get in to and thats all you need (id say 6 max)

16, which is just about right for me in my opinion. Way less than the one person that applied to 80 programs and didn't get in to at least one program using PTCAS.

i know i saw that "80 application" person on apta stat sheet. But you have to assume that they knew their grades werent gonna cut it so they just threw out the net to see if anyone would bite.

I applied to 3. Moving out of state/across state isn't an option for me and there were 3 schools in the area where I want to be/need to be because of family. 🙂

I applied to 8..I got rejected from one (NOVA) and I have an interview for Shenandoah in January. I haven't heard from any others yet
I have a couple that I might add on in a week or so, still thinking about it

I applied to 10. Initially it was 7, but like everyone said I just wanted to "cover my arse" in case it got too competitive. I have 4 interviews and 2 acceptances already. I have withdrawn from most of the programs since my acceptances, because these programs are cheaper. So I really have it down to 4 schools that are on my radar.

I applied to 5. I have interviewed at 2 already and was told I would hear back no matter what before the holidays. So far I haven't heard anything, so I am hoping that is good news?! I have a 3rd interview next week. Another school I applied to I didn't meet the early deadline, so I am hoping I will hear something after their Jan. 15 final deadline. And the 5th school will inform applicants who will be interviewing of their interview dates by Dec. 23. So I'm just playing the waiting game!

I applied to 15!! What a lot!! (including some nursing programs)

Wow! You folks have applied to lots of programs.

I applied to...........1

Future, where's your interview next week?

Well good luck! Where is that?

I haven't had time to think about my next interview...finals first! especially physics!

From what I've read on here though, you've already been accepted to several programs! I planned on applying to SBU but the private tuition made me change my mind!

I guess I just have to keep on patiently waiting and hope I get that acceptance!

I applied to 10 programs. I definitely feel like that was too many now I have too many decisions to make!

I had a nice set of fantastic schools in prime locales I had a good shot to get into but their admission prices did not match the worth of a PT education (honestly). Hah, 10 gone right there.

Thus, I had a serious re-look and found a nice set of public schools that offer standard to fantastic DPT programs and if all goes well I can choose from a select few. Talk to me in summer, and I'll have a better response.

I applied to 14 better safe than sorry for me since Temple just rejected me through email (didn't even give me a chance to interview...)

Oh man 🙁 What a bummer! Sorry to hear about Temple. But, I just know you'll be hearing good news soon enough!!

I applied to 9, although there are only two or three that I really want to attend. The others are purely a back-up plan.

It's OK. You'll get one soon. (not jixing you), in that case, I just got waitlisted at Temple through email also

I've applied to 10 DPT programs, and got 1 rejection so far. .......🙁

I just can't imagine spending the money to apply to 10+ schools.

I wish all of you the best, and I hope you each get into te school that you want.

If I had it to do it again, I might take 3-5 programs off my list. This application process was a wallet killer for a broke grad student like myself. I just kept hearing about how competitive the process is(esp. at some of the schools I applied to), so I used all of those applications as a security blanket. After I received admittance to two of my top programs and interviews to a few more, the rest were automatically off my list. You live and you learn!

Would you rather apply to only 5 schools and then find out you didn't get in to at least one and maybe you would have if you applied to 10??? Not directed at you Ox, because your stats are rockin', but for some others with lesser stats.

Right??? In my case I didn't want to regret anything and covered my arse. I was going to use PTCAS anyway so the initial $120 or whatever I have to add in just to use PTCAS for one school; $35 here and there for a few programs arent that bad. And plus I do have a job so it makes it easy. I understand where everyone is coming from tho!

Yeah. I'm happy with the choice to apply to 8 schools. It gives me options, especially since I have no idea what my true chances are of getting into some of the programs are. Am I in some pain over the amount of money I've spent on this, you bet! Let me tell you, when you apply to 8 schools, and you have to factor in GRE scores, transcripts, and supplemental applications well...damn. But that's also why I've been working as much as I have to not only afford the applications fees, but the cost of interviews as well.

Ultimately though, the amount of schools you apply to is up to you. Again, I had the mentality that, well, what's an extra $1000 spent now to make sure I not only am accepted into a program, but that I have the opportunity to pick the best program that fits my needs? If I did this again, I would probably have spent a bit more time researching other programs that I was less familiar with. I may have still ended up with 8 schools, but possibly different ones, as I picked programs to a certain extent based off my familiarity with either the school or the location.

One More rep, how do you feel about Mercer not being accredited yet? I was thinking about applying there but I decided not to because of this. I wonder how long it will take for them to get accreditation. PTCAs says they are in the process so I was thinking 2-3 years tops which is perfect for incoming class in 2011.

Developing programs don't get accredited until just before the introductory class graduates, which in Mercer's case is May of 2013. Lot of money to spend with no guarantees at the end.

That's what I was afraid of. Mercer and Lynchburg college were the two I was actually looking at, but I held off on it.

jbizzle,

I wouldn't have taken it personal even if it was directed at me. Lol. Just so you know😉. I totally understand why a person would apply to many programs, even if a person does have relatively strong stats. I have a buddy who was a chemistry major in undergrad and had a 3.3 gpa. And just so we are abundantly clear, being a chem, physics, or math major can be extremely rigorous. He was pre-health just like many of us are. Dude is an extremely strong student, but his gpa was what it was(3.3). He applied to 12 dental programs and even more PharmD programs. Did not get into any. 😱. You just can't make this kind of stuff up. He also did well on his PCAT. Not sure about his DAT. It can be daunting to hear stuff like this, granted dental and pharm can be more rigorous to matriculate into than many DPT programs(not all).

So to optimize your chances, it is a great idea to apply to more programs. That's,in part, why I did it, and why I suspect everyone who applied to "a lot" of programs did as well.

@markelmarcel and jbizzle: thanks guys. i'm going to keep my head up for now and worry about other things first. Like finals week right now haha...one thing at a time!

better to apply to a bunch of schools and not regret it later. To be honest, I'm dropping all this money and it may seem painful right now but in the long run it will be worth it since not to be jinxing any one and myself, what happens if if we had to redo this whole process all over again for the 2nd or even the 3rd time for some of the people out there. In the end, it is a sacrifice we know we are getting ourselves into (even when the parents give you pressure and crap about it).

That's why I was like "Hello poor people fee waiver" *apply* 😉

Of course, that was a concern for me. However, after visiting the school and talking with faculty and students, I have no doubt that they will receive accreditation right before the inaugural class graduates in 2013. Here is my take on it: Mercer has a long history as a reputable institution for medicine, pharmacy, nursing and other health science fields. If this was some podunk school that just got off the ground, I would be concerned. But, this is Mercer. They have a reputation to uphold and they take it seriously.

The director and the faculty are highly experienced and very passionate about ensuring the success of the program. The curriculum is impressive to me and stands out among the curriculum I have seen at other schools. In addition, they have the only Orthopedic Residency program in Georgia and just added a Neurologic Residency program that will partner with Shepherd Center. As someone who wants to specialize in neuro, this is a huge benefit for me.

I am hoping lots of people were too scared to apply, so I will easily get accepted! 🙂

For those of you who applied to 10+ schools, just curious: did you check out the costs of the programs before deciding to apply? Or was cost not a factor?

I spent most of today looking at the cost of the program (will be applying this summer) at various schools, and there were a big fat FOUR that I could (maybe) afford. And to tell you the truth, I wasn't crazy about 2 of them. I would love to go out of state, but when I saw some of these tuition rates I almost had a stroke. Add room & board to that and stick a fork in me!

So I guess my question is, do you guys suggest applying to schools whose programs look great and not factor in the cost? Maybe I shouldn't be freaking out about the price tag yet since I'm hoping to get some sort of scholarship/financial aid...

I figure I'll be in debt anyways after PT school so, what the hell.

Cost played a factor in the few schools I added after my initial submission...they are all state schools and thus waaayyy cheaper. But initially cost was not a factor when picking which schools to APPLY to, but it will become more of a factor when determining which school to actually attend.

I would absolutely figure cost in. As far as scholarships, I have not seen many programs that offer substantial scholarships. My state school affers small scholarships, but they are not offered until third year. The financial aid I have seen is student loans.

Haha! Thats what I was thinking also, because I didn't know if I could get into any school at all.

meliffy18- there are financial sacrifices that we DPT students will all go through to become a PT...that's how I look at it. Just curious though, which four programs were the ones you thought you could maybe afford?

Come to think about it, what are the state tuition rates for in-state DPT students at the programs you guys applied to? I only applied to one state school and I believe their tuition is about 50k for in state. How about you guys?

I agree with the financial sacrifice but some of these price tags are around $100k+ for tuition alone. I think that is nuts. One school (forget which one) was $1700 A CREDIT! I want to get a decent education but at the same time I can't justify spending that kind of money.

I'm in NY so I was looking at 2 CUNYs (Staten Island and Hunter...those were the ones I wasn't thrilled about) and 2 SUNYs (Stony Brook and Syracuse). The SUNY tuition is about $60k give or take.

WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good Lord! Thats like a 50 credit program then right😉???

The public MPT programs I applied to are at CSUs (California State Universities) and they come in around $3K/semester...usually I think 6 semesters and 1 or 2 summers...so on the high end it's $24-320K in tuition fees for the program. :-/

The only public DPT program in CA is UCSF and they come in at $24K/year plus an additional $10K for the summers....so that's about oh, $82K for the program. (Yet another reason why UCSF is slowly falling from my list of top schools). Though, their website does state "UCSF sets aside 33% of the revenue generated from the apporved fee increases to mitigate the impact of higher fees and other costs on students with financial need."

So yeah...there's some random info about in-state tuition for California.

My original list was 10 but now it's up to 12. I just have no idea where I can get in - I feel like my stats are right at the average - so I just wanted to see what happened.

I have a friend who applied last year to 14 schools and she only got into 2! And she got turned down from a lot of schools that were either not ranked or ranked low and she's now a student at Wash U (#2)! So I really felt like there's no way of knowing what the typical pattern is unless your stats are amazing and really not.

I figured it wouldn't hurt...and the application fees are nothing compared to what tuition is going to be.

I applied to 12 schools, 4 of which I applied to as back-ups because they looked decent and were cheap to apply to or they required prereqs that boosted my GPA, etc.
