How many programs is everyone applying to?

The title says it all.. How many programs is everyone applying to this year? Right now I've got like 53 programs on my list and I have had ppl tell me thats too many.

Unfortunately, the title, with its poor grammar, says more than you intended.

As for your actual question, the number of programs you apply to is dependent on a multitude of factors, primarily how strong an applicant (you think) you are, and how much money you are willing to spend. In my opinion, everyone applying to a highly competitive field should apply to as many programs as you can afford, if you would consider going to those programs. Great candidates go unmatched every year.

I'm actually not that picky in terms of where I'd like to end up, so I'm not opposed to casting my net wide. I was always under the impression that ortho was a very regional specialty and that I wouldn't even be considered for interviews in programs out west since I go to school in NY, but my PD said that I should consider applying to some of the California programs for instance. You know how common it is for people to cross the Mississippi? I was reading on orthogate and it seems like its mostly people from the east posting on there and most of them end up in the east as well...
