....to apply to that is. After seeing a poll with the # of schools people are applying to I have began to question the # of schools I'm applying to. I see that several people are going to apply to 11 or more schools.
Poll: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=632193

At what point is it too much? Does anyone have any ideas on a breakdown that correlates GPA, DAT, and ECs to ideal # number of schools?

It depends on your stats. What are your stats?

If you have the stats of the average matriculant, 3.5 and 19 DAT, than 10-12 schools is fine. If you have lower stats, you need to apply to more schools. If you have higher stats, you'll prob apply to more schools because you'll have more dream/reach schools because they become a possibility. Only if you have extraordinary stats should you apply to 5 schools, like if you have 3.8 and 24 DAT. You'll hear stories of people with average stats who apply to 1 or 2 schools and get in, but for every person who does that, another 10 people have to re-apply because they didn't apply to enough schools. I'd say that for most people, 10-12 is the right number of schools.

And which are those 5 schools?

The schools that you apply to should reflect upon your stats as well as your preferences. What are looking for when you head into dental school? A school that is more research based or clinical based, are you looking into a school that is located in the heart of the city or somewhere thats more quiet, and etc. The best way is to look at the schools that fall within your range and do research on them to see which suits you. Have a few reach schools and there you go, you have your list.
