Ok, not $50, but $500. Lets say you could pay $500 to be able to put an MD after your name rather than DO. You would have a choice to either leave a DO title or get it converted into MD. Would you do it?

I'm expecting many hours of enjoyment to result from this thread :corny:

I would never change my letters, to anything MD, MDO, DOM, MDDO, or anything else. I would pay alot more than $500 for the public to understand that we are fully priveledged physicians EQUAL to MDs, and to never have to be asked again to explain what Osteopathic Medicine is.

Well said

I think most DO's don't really care what letters are after our names, just as long as we get to be physicians. Threads like this are pretty lame though. It reinforces the misconception many people have that people who went to DO schools only go b/c they couldn't get into an allopathic school which really isn't true. I think most people go to DO schools b/c there aren't as many douche bags in the DO world as there are in the MD world. The person who started this thread seems to be an exception.

Also well said (generous with the love tonight😉)

I think the only thing this poll reinforces is the OP's aversion to attending an osteopathic medical school. 👎

Spot on, ol' chap.

Yes. 👍

It's amazing how every thread the OP starts just leaves me shaking my head.

I'd pay $50 to have a picture of a phallus on my nametag instead of "DO".

ugh... 15 people say yes that they'd change it and 20 say that they would not change it. I wish I could take one of the spots of those 15.

This is not true...if we were equal there would be one degree. More accurately, DO's are equivalent. Don't mean to be an as*...just wanted to clear up the nuance.

Dude, why do you keep making these offensive threads. I'm really surprised you're not banned for trolling.

What do you find offensive: the thread, or the fact that half of all DOs would make the switch?

Half of the people on sdn HARDLY means half of all DOs. I would be very interested to know the breakdown of the people who voted in favor, I'd be willing to be it'd be overwhelmingly pre-meds.

Agreed. I'm happy with the degree I will be receiving. I've never personally come across any of the issues with recognition that people keep mentioning, and I really don't mind talking to my patients about osteopathic medicine, should they ask.

The thread, and the repeat posts by the OP which bring up these MD/DO topics. Alright, back to studying I go.

Why? Does being a student make you some sort of expert on the collective opinion of practicing DOs?

I would never switch over, even if you paid me. This is rediculous. If I wanted to have an MD after my name, then that's the degree I would have pursued. Instead, I chose to attend an osteopathic medical school, which grants a DO degree. Obviously, I am fine with that. The bottomline is that there is a choice here.

Do you go to a DO school?? Unfortunately there is a large percentage of people that do this. It's not that these people (I am one of them) can't get into an MD school, they just didn't and instead did get into a DO school (I think the state DO schools are an exception to this though because of lower tuition). Who cares? We will all be physicians first and foremost.

I am actually against changing the degree or its abbreviation because it's too much of a pain in the *** for no real good reason. The main reason people cite is to have the public recognize that we are equivalent to MDs. I find this funny because the public is so clueless about most things, especially about things that don't really effect them. DOs having a different degree doesn't really change the treatment that most people will receive (unless you are OMM boarded and specialize in that) so why would they bother to educate themselves. Those that are interested will understand the different degree but most won't.

And I do agree that there seem to be less D-bags and gunners at DO schools compared to the classmates of my good friends at MD schools. But also that could be because most DO students didn't happen to get in to MD schools and they just want to be physicians regardless of the initials following their name. These are cool people and will probably make compassionate, great docs. But let's stop kidding ourselves about how many DO students are die-hard "osteopaths" and would fight tooth and nail to keep the D.O. following their name. As long as I can practice medicine without any restrictions, you could change the initials after my name to anything. OK, maybe not A.S.S.

This thread is PATHETIC....you guys look like a bunch of tools and reinforces bad misconceptions....I wouldn't trade my school for anything.

are you really this naive? does believing this bull$hit make you feel better about pursuing a DO degree?

😴

We need some kind of filter for this crap. Something like your post can't contain both "D.O." and "M.D." or use the abbreviation "v.s." unless you've been a member for more than one year.

🙂 well, im gonna be an MD so being a tool is a pre-req right? theres no need to rationalize why you are gonna be a DO, i.e. MDs are more competitive, not as friendly...and the list goes on and on. it just makes it that much more painfully obvious that youre trying to prove something to yourself. good luck with that

I am not trying to prove anything to myself. I am trying to facilitate the revelation that you sir are, in fact, a complete and total douche. My theory:

if x = you are a douche, then

(your posts on this thred + an MD degree) x + log z = you are a tool

That's just science, my friend.
