BlameItOnTheNurse

Besides all the bribes and payoffs, i just wanted to know who has spent the most $$$ to get into med school this year. I am including the following in my total costs:
1. New suit- cost...approximately 3 banana's= $300.00...
2. Amcas crap...$720.00 (i applied to 18-22 schools... i cant remember...I am repressing all those thoughts
3. Occomas crap...200.00( was not sure how i did on mcat so i sent out to a 4 DO schools
4. Hotels-$100.00( only had to stay at hotels twice)
5. One plane ticket--$220.
6. Gas to drive to state schools---$50.00
7. Secondary application fees---approx $600.00
8. cab fees...60 bucks
This brings my total to $2200.00( this is alot for a poor student like me) 😡

Not included are the vaccinations shots needed before entry to med school(hepatitis, etc) and i am sure there are others. So what did it cost you. This is so you know how much to ask you parents to set aside for those applying this yr!

It cost me a little over 9000. Probably more becuase I didn't count the cost of my luggage, suit, shoes... it's very depressing to think of that much money gone to just TRYING to get into a school to BECOME a doctor.

are you people including kaplan and princeton---are you serious about the 10K that you spent..You know april fools was last week

9. Getting in. Priceless.

•9. Getting in. Priceless.•••••Not true. That'll cost you another $100-200K.

You guys are CRAZY! I feel incredibly bitter about this process...used, cheated, robbed, and raped (god forbid). And I spend about $3000, not including the $1500 for Princeton Review and the MCAT. And my results have not been fruitful. Just think what I could be doing with the end of my senior year if I had an extra $4500 in my pocket!

I'm at around $9,000. This is after 6 interviews and applying to 22 schools. All interviews were out-of-state (east coast from Utah)

Just curious...who is funding all these costs for you guys?

I covered all the expenses myself...no help from anyone. It took all of my summer salary from this past summer, and all of the money I made during both semesters...and it took living on pennies at a few points this year. But finding free food is not so hard in college...i think i have gained 10lbs off of free, cold pizza just so I could afford this application process

this is pretty sad. I geuss I never added it up before but I spent around 3,700 including the Kaplan course. I applied mainly to schools in the Northeast though so I didn't have to pay for airfare. As for your other question. I covered about 95% of the cost and my parents fronted the rest.

Very impressive lyle!

How can anyone gain 10lbs off of free food?

How about the others that have spent ~10K?

Well, Kaplan, MCAT's, random extracurriculars that I probably wouldn't have done otherwise(not that I didn't enjoy them, but I don't see myself taking EMT as a CS major), summer classes... Wow!

The number is already ridiculous, and I haven't even applied yet.

if only the AAMC knew about how much money we are all spending (actually they do, but I would guess that they would never admit it to the media). For what the class entering summer 2002 spent on applying, we could have vaccinated an entire third world country. AAMC should be ashamed of itself.

maybe if received coupons for sexual favors along with rejections and waitlists, it wouldn't be as bad....

At least we would be receiving something for out money!

j/k.

I ususally am not one to make jokes of this nature, but that is what this process does to sane people.

I was calculating every single penny spent (including postage) up until I got to around 6K or so. I then stopped. This was around November of last year. Since then I have probably tacked on another 4K or so.

This is WITHOUT any sort of MCAT stuff - courses etc.

Coming from the west coast on numerous A to B to C back to A plane trips killed me. My New York trip the first time cost about 1300 dollars.

So yea...I funded it all myself with my current job. Basically every single penny that came in, went out to that and for rent....

I'm very impressed by all of you! That you were able to support yourself through the application process is an achievement in itself. Be proud of that! As for me, since I'm applying out of college, I've had to totally rely on my parents. And I then I think about my total lack of income until I'm 30 and that makes me saaaaad. Especially when my roommates are all going on to investment banking jobs in NYC....sometimes you wonder, is it all worth it? I guess it is, if you're not in it for the $$$$, otherwise, there are much better ways to make money. Times have changed and a good education and solid job no longer guarantee a big retirement fund and $$$, if you don't believe me, check out "Rich Dad, Poor Dad," a book that I believe is very interesting.

I started a thread on this months ago and people had already spent thousands and thousands...Myself - I pretty much stopped going to interviews early, after I got into my state school, so I saved some money - I don't know exactly how much I spent (dont want to add it all up) but it's in the 6K neighborhood.

17 interviews, only went to 12. greyhound is the way to go. didnt take kaplan. look at it as an investment. ~$7000-financed myself. thank god for tax return.
p.s. i guess i should add my $20000 post-bac program (loans).

I posted a breakdown elsewhere, but I think I have invested ~$7000. I paid about 80% of that out of my own pocket. I could have saved a bunch if I had stopped interviewing after my early acceptance. Hindsight's 20/20.

This process is definately too expensive!

1.suit,tie,shoes-$450
2.prep course-$1000
3.mcat-$175?
4.primaries-$500
5.secondaries(including letter service)-$690
6.interviews:
subway/bus:$13
car gas:$50
car rental:$120
hotel:$50
airfare:$0 (frequent flyer miles)
TOTAL:$3,048 but I'll add in 300 or so for things I haven't thought of =3348.

Hmmm..this is interesting:

1. AMCAS: maybe $600 for 19 schools
2. Secondaries: $1400
3. One suit: $90
4. Committee letter: $500
I canceled all the interviews I had to fly out to - so I only had to take the subway.

Total: $2590
* Does not include cost of Kaplan, $20,000 in undergrad loans and 2-years of post-bac program tuition - not to mention the LOSS of income due to working in a lab.

right around $7k and going up

it is all worth it

AK

Application Fee - $50

Total - $50

9 or 10 thousand dollars is a shocking amount of money! my lord

I am shocked that with so much money spent on applying, more people aren't waiting until after they graduate from college and get a job to apply! What do you all do, put it on a credit card and enter med school with $10,000 of debt? wow.....that's scary.

The total cost is around $4600 for me (including a Kaplan class and interview attire.) I saved up working full time all last summer (vs. my usual 30 hr/wk), but I still didn't have enough in my bank account , so some of it (~1K) is on my credit card.

$2000.00, three frequent flyer tickets, a poor grade in biochemistry from missing so many classes for interviews, a pathetic social life, chronic sleep deprivation, and a kidney. (Okay, so I didn't have to give up any nonvital organs, but at times I think I would have been willing).

$1300 Kaplan class
$175 MCAT
$100 suit and heels (on sale! 🙂 )
$750 amcas primary
$1350 (approx secondary fees for 18 secondaries)
$50 premed board fee for LOR
$600 plane fare for finch and vermont
$225 plane fare for philly
$150 plane fare for DC
$100 hotel in DC
$35 cab fare/shuttle fee in DC
$50 cab fare to boston (big mistake but too late now)
$300 plane fare to gainesville
$100 cost of changing my spring break FL tickets to leave early for interviews
$200 approximate total for shuttle services to and from the airport (and I buy my boyfriend dinner every time he takes me 🙂 )
$100 approximate food and miscellaneous cost at interviews

Total as of now: $5,585

my credit card is crying!

Even if you spent 10K, an acceptance ought to make that seems like nothing. I agree that getting in = priceless. I think I spent roughly $4500K, mostly on interview travel and car rental. I drove everywhere! Longest drive was 4 hours! I am crazy!

•••quote:••• 4. Committee letter: $500
••••WHAT???!!! $500 for writing a committee letter?????? That is ridiculous!! Which college does that?

Just think, you'll get to do it all over again when applying for residency. I spent over 6K for interview trips, application, match fee, USMLE, etc.

I am too afraid to figure out my expenses but I stopped counting at $4000...I had to fly in and out of an obscure airport which killed me...plus I applied to all east coast schools and wasn't located there when I was interviewing...how did I pay for it? I saved up for 3 years and I am still running a credit card debit...would I ever do it again? Hell yes....I got into my dream school that if I had applied conservatively would never have even applied (that trip alone was $700) I *personally* believe it was worth every penny. I made the decisions 3 years ago that I would do it once and do it right.

I am starting to save for the residency interview stuffs on day one of medical school!
