I know this question comes up quite a few times on this forum, but I checked around and it seems as if they were old posts. As more students are continuing to pursue and graduate from dental school, I know that the tuition is increasing as well as the number of practices.

I want to know how much dentists make because I was calculating how much do they have to put out each month to pay off their loans.

If there are any recent dental graduates, can anyone give me an insight how much they make each year? If this is personal, please message me. Thanks!

Here in houston right out of school you can work for the county at 120k. So you should be able to get around that if you associate with another dentist.

It's going to vary by location and also vary by the person. I think a fresh graduate should shoot for around $500 per work day if they associate.

I'm still in school though, so take this information however you want.

Really depends on a lot of things... Whether you're going to be an associate, buy into a practice, start your own, have a family friend bring you in, or have a family member give it to you. Also depends a lot on how busy the practice is, how much they charge, what kind of area it is in (how much you CAN charge), overhead, and what kind of a dentist you will be. I know 2 associates, one made about 130 k his first year, the other about 170. I also know the guy who my uncle brought in to his practice (grew up as family friends), he made about 450k his first year and has increased every year (this was like 7 or 8 years ago). Really depends on your situation coming out of school.

I'm still a senior in undergrad, so really what do I know, but I grew up around the profession.

Assuming he is just a GP, you are lying.

I've heard other GPs making this starting, but out of curiosity was he a specialist?

How would I benefit from lying about this...? I don't really know him and he isn't related to me, so im not bragging, just trying to show variations in possible starting salaries. He is a GP, they practice in a very blue collar area where tons of big time dental work needs to be done. The office has 12 operatories, 4 hygienists, and an associate. Based on the time ive spent there shadowing, he has at least 3 or 4 operatories filled at a time and works incredibly hard and fast. I didn't see his pay checks, just going off what my uncle told me. But generally their practice makes 2 mil or more a year.

He's not lying, GP from a lot of areas (including where I'm from) are bringing in 600k. 450k is definitely believable for a hard working beginning dentist.

Where are you from?

Are you sure as a fresh grad you can find job that easily and take away so much money home? I have heard fresh grads dont find jobs easily.

He said first year out.

Rural NM. I know the income isn't normal, not every area is in such a huge need for dentists.

Okay stay right there, I'm moving in.

Haha that's what my uncle says. He's in the same situation. You pay the price to be a big fish in a little pond. And literally there is nothing to do there.

Do people commute to these areas and instead live in cities or are the commutes not worth it?

The nearest city ( more than 50,00 people) is almost 3 hours away

My uncle doesn't live that far from a major city, like 30-45 mins, but the "major" city close to him pretty much sucks. Im talking about the kind of place where essentially ur locked into your whole life, everybody knows everybody, and the biggest thing around is highschool football. So for people in his area, they have a few options: go to him (a person they've known their whole life and they are comfortable with), go to a dentist down the street (who is kind of "weird" if I may say so myself and doesn't have much interest in becoming wealthy, or so it seems), or go to aspen dental (where the 3 dentists there barely speak English). Because the area is relatively poor, they all charge basically the same price (what insurance will pay), so most people choose to go to my uncle's practice. Literally they are ALWAYS busy and get about 5-10 new patients a week.

So the money is great, but the place is sort of/definitely depressing. Also, for what it's worth, everything is SO cheap there, like the cost of living.

You've never visited places like this. You would definitely take the 200k pay cut to live somewhere else!
no....**** that... I'd go to hell to pay back my loans faster and gtfo asap and start over in a fun area once I'm done with it all loll

I've always heard 120k as a pretty solid estimate... For whatever that's worth. I'd be happy with it! :)
