How much do we need to know about NMR?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My orgo 2 class treated NMR in the last part of the semester and i did not study it or read anything about it in my book. i glanced at the powerpoint presentation once and spent the remaining class time working on a research paper on my laptop. My instructor had said he wouldn't test us on it so i didn't see the need to bother.

Reading TBR coverage for NMR scared me. It made me open up my textbook and i got even more intimidated because the text had about 3 chapters covering spectroscopy. I had 2.5 months to study for the mcat and couldn't wast time reading 50pages a chapter. The best thing i found was kaplan's online workshop for spectroscopy. i had the kaplan premiere book and i have to say that for anyone who isn't very smart and didn't study spectroscopy in school, that's the best option. I skipped TBR coverage and spent 1.5hrs going through that workshop and taking notes and when i came back to do TBR questions, i did not get a single spectroscopy question wrong. Likewise, i got all the questions right in EK 1001.

My point is, if you have a friend who has the kaplan 2010 premiere book, see if they'll let you do that workshop. Otherwise, try EK. having gone through kaplans online workshop last year, EK was a good way to help me remember the stuff. TBR seems to take a long theoretical approach when it comes to spectroscopy.

TBR goes into severe detail in chapter 2. How much time should I spend memorizing this material? It seems a bit excessive.

Luckily for me, my Orgo class focused a lot on NMRs so I find them pretty easy. Just memorize a couple of signal regions and that should be all you need..

A good rule of thumb for MCAT prep. is if it is under the testable material on the year's MCAT, it's fair game to know it well. I say this because I didn't think I would have anything as far as IR, MS, NMR on my test (the real MCAT), but I had a few discrete questions and 1 passage based on the last 2.
