How much do you do?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Volunteering and research won't put you "a cut above the rest," since most applicants have one or both of those activities. If you're going to do an extracurricular activity, you should do it for your own benefit. Don't do stuff just to look good on an application.

Get a 40+ and it will definitely put you a cut above the rest. Above 99.9%, at least.

Well put UCLAstudent!!!! I totally agree with you. Do an activity because you want to, not because you want to fill in another EC slot on your AMCAS application. Enough said. 🙄

Hmmm, unique, nontheless still disgusting.

I agree with doing something because you like it. I could have shadowed a doctor, but I wanted to get dirty. Thats why I volunteered with the medical examiner. And I definitely got dirty. It was so fun to have such a hands-on approach to getting acquainted with the human anatomy.

😕

I agree with UCLAstudent!! Awesome point..most applicants have research and clinical experiences.

I don't have a 40 MCAT, but i would like to think my scores are good enough 🙂

Anyhow, I think the UCDavis application perfectly captures what medical schools are looking for....What did you get out of all of your activities? How will these things reinforced your desire to become a physician? How will these things help you in medical school or your future medical career?

If you activities, don't just be a participant. Be a leader. I got to serve on the national board for the Red Cross...amazing experience! If you do research! Publish! And longevity in less extracurriculars is more important than lots of activities that you have done in 1 or 2 years...at least that's how Princeton Undergrad looks at their applicants
